i'm building a computer, this is what I am planning to get: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/frbjNG . The case is actually an R3 (I think, might be an R2, how do I know? I got it second hand...) and the graphics card is also second hand, which is why it's not a top notch model.

So what I am asking is, will 500W be enough even with overclocking? And I know someone selling his Corsair VX550, maybe for something like 30 USD, how much is it worth anyway?

u herd i liek pudkipz then ur rite ill do cut4pudkipz cuz i can has no pudkipz

The system could run off of a decent 350w. The vx550 would be plenty. $30 sounds about right.

For the difference between the R2 and R3: http://www.bit-tech.net/hardware/cases/2010/10/29/fractal-design-define-r3-review/1

Get the CX500. It's a newer psu and is 80+ bronze rated. Another good option is the EVGA 500 B.

Well, the thing is that I can get the VX550 for about $30 and the CX500 for $60, so my question is, should I rather get the new but way more expensive one?

Very old series of power supplies. Not on Corsairs website anymore. I don't think I'd heard of them before today.

80Plus Standard, non-modular, all that stuff you probably know since you're considering buying it.

HardOCP reports the VX550W is full of Nippon Chemi-Cons, surprisingly good for such an old PSU.

The efficiency isn't that good by today's standards, but the regulation and ripple are decent and good. Seems to have been a budget series even when it was introduced. It's aged well in terms of our expectations of component selection and performance. I would've expected such an old unit to be worse than it is. Capable of handling 50C temperatures in the HardOCP review quite nicely. Corsair's website lists 40dba at max load, which you probably won't reach, but the reviews had no issues with the fan noise. Back in 2007 this was enough to get a 9.5/10 from JonnyGuru.com and an Enthusiast Gold Award from HardOCP.

All in all, it's a pretty good choice for a $30 budget unit, as long as the one your friend has is in decent condition.

How is it that Corsair's line of budget PSUs from 2007 is full of Nippon's but the "high end" Corsair RM series a good 6-7 years later is full of crappy Elite's, Capxon's, Ltec's and Teapo's? Corsair please.

Daemonowner just summed out how I thought of that VX550 psu. Tbh,i would get that VX550 too if it was a new unit. If the one that you're getting still has warranty to it,then that would be fine. If not, spend a bit more and get a new one just for the peace of mind.

Haha that's what I thought too. I'm quite surprised to read such a good review for that psu from JohnnyGuru and HardOCP,even from way way back (2007) when most psu tend to be average or downright mediocre. Corsair said that they try to cater more to what the market wants in a budget psu (modular, silent, gold rated) so there has to be some compromise with the components quality in order to reach the price point. But as they said, they've tested everything to achieve their standard and all should be well and good. For now...maybe.

I'd stick with the vx550 unless you really want a modular solution.
