So here's something you can do if you're looking for cheap games to try out. In steam's search, type 64. That's it. As it turns out there's a lot of fun indie games that decided to adopt the naming scheme of Nintendo's first 64-bit console. Most obvious would be the port of the N64 Doom, but there are other games as well, including games not named something64. There's also games available from another system with 64 in the name: the commodore 64. I'm not into old computer games, so I don't know about the selection, but everyone tell me what fun games you find. If you're worried about performance, don't be. These games were designed to look like they run on a console from almost thirty years ago, whatever potato quality pc you have, it can probably run these games.
