Not much to worry about,

You could wear a linked bracelet made for that purpose,

You could avoid touching the electronic parts of parts while assembling.

You could regularly discharge your electricity by touching something grounded and conductive. Heating appliance comes to mind, not sure if it's the best example.

So, not on the carpet? On the desk. That should answer your question.

Here's an LTT video to maybe give you a more realistic idea of what to expect around static electricity.

As for an anecdote, I have never once fried a part after building probably a hundred computers - several at home, on carpet. I just touch an earthed bit of metal first, like non-painted part of a radiator, just in case.

Best practice is not to, but we've all done it. I've built computers for paying customers on carpet, with a steak-knife as a screwdriver, in my underwear, drinking Jameson and watching Southpark. No harm was done to anything but my self respect.

Leclod nailed it. If you're worried get a bracelet, discharge regularly to the grounded PSU, I think sitting in a chair with your feet off the carpet would probably help too.

As great as the Electroboom video was I'm not sure it was entirely fair. There was a very angry electrical engineer in the comment section of a video showing how easy it is to upgrade the new Ugreen servers, he cited some good sources including microscope imagery of how static discharge can weaken components by reducing the lifespan of small capacitors and weakening solder joints. It was actually kind of wild seeing what a finger discharge did to the solder on those tiny components. It won't kill it today, and it probably won't kill it in 5 years of normal desktop use, but he convinced me that it becomes significant in the control boards of 24/7 industrial equipment that's supposed to last 20 years.

Not me always building computers on the soft carper cuz its comfy :p.

But yeah if you can avoid standing on carpet do that. Else just use a table and dont start shuffling with socks on the carpet.
