Today I bought an AMD A6-6400K to replace the A4-4000 that was in my work PC. Install went smoothly, but when it came to installing the video drivers, things went downhill very fast.

I downloaded the latest AMD Catalyst after uninstalling the current version, and attempted to install the new drivers, but the video and HDMI audio drivers failed. I got this message: "Driver Install: user must be a member of the Administrators group". This is strange because I am the only account on this computer, no standard users here. I tried multiple times, completely uninstalling after each failure just to be sure. Sometimes it ended with an error, and sometimes it just froze.

After searching online, I saw that sometimes the driver issues came from the motherboard, so I went to the AsRock website and downloaded the video drivers for my model, which ended up being Catalyst anyway, and I got the same failure notes.

I kinda need this computer up and running smoothly as soon as possible, so it would be great if any of you guys know of a solution I could try. Thanks for reading

have you tried running the installer as administrator? tried updating the BIOS or motherboard firmware?

Oh wow I can't believe I haven't tried that yet. I guess I thought because I was an administrator it would automatically run as administrator

Going to try that now, I should have an answer in 10-15 minutes

Yeah looking at the description of this version of Catalyst, I was probably one of those affected by AHCI. Waiting for it to install now

Then did you uninstall previous drivers and remove installation files folder (C:\AMD)?

Yea. Done the BIOS update and fingers crossed for Catalyst

Ha it's actually come up with a message asking if I want to install the video drivers. I'll take that as a good sign

The A4-4000 was really slow, and the A6-6400K had good benchmarks for its price

I like  how you people use quote function...

Have you installed .net framework?

Whaddya mean? No quotes here! And yea, I just installed the .net framework. Installing drivers now, but it's been stuck at the start of doing the video drivers for 5 minutes. Not looking good

Also keep in mind that this was the first computer I ever built, nearly 12 months ago. I didn't have much knowledge of parts so I made some really stupid decisions, like using a generic power supply (which has since been replaced)

a a4 4000 is limited to 4.5ghz. the a6 6400k won't be that much faster unless you run it at 4.8-5.0ghz.

The slowness problem I was having with the A4-4000 was the onboard graphics. I've seen some of the stuff the A6-6400K can do, especially in games, which is good because it's also used for gaming when I have a mate over

to increase onboard gpu performance your gonna need 1866mhz ram not 1333mhz its to slow to game on  the apus thrive on fast ram

Ram isn't the only thing that dictates a GPU's performance

In terms of apu ram speed is a def for gpu performance   its all good if you have 192 of them but if the ram is low speed it wont perform as well.

plus you can hybrid the a6 6400k with a 6670 or 6570
