Bought an external drive to transfer data from old pc to new pc.

I am trying to transfer large groups of files, like my music folder thats 100gb. It will start, get a good way through, and then just, the drive dissapears from my pc. IF I unplug and replug it then works fine. Ive already disabled the usb power saving thing in the settings.

Drive is a seagate expansion 2tb

Under normal circumstances, a portable storage drive should not disconnect except when physically unplugged from the computer. Perhaps the drive is overheating, or the drive controller / USB circuit board is faulty in some way.

Try using the drive on another computer to see if it exhibits the same problem.

  • If it does, something is wrong with the drive.
  • If it does not, it could also be your computer's USB ports.

For example, I've had a few WD 2.5 inch "My Book" portable USB HDD's whose USE control boards were... flakey at best, and non-functional at worst. The raw SATA HDD's worked fine when removed from the enclosure and connected to my PC directly using SATA Data + Power, which helped me narrow the issue to the USB control boards inside the portable enclosure.

Desktop: KiRaShi-Intel-2022 (i5-12600K, 5060 Ti) Mobile: Moto Razr 50 Ultra (Razr+ 2024) | 30GB CAN+US+MEX $30/month
Laptop: Lenovo Yoga 7i (16") 82UF0015US (i7-12700H, 16GB/2TB RAM/SSD, A370M GPU) Tablet: Lenovo Tab Plus (256GB)
Camera: Canon M6 Mark II | Canon Rebel T1i (500D) | Canon SX280 Music: Spotify Premium (CIRCA '08)

It's a non user serviceable drive. I've tried it on multiple ports. There's nothing large on the other pc to test with unfortunately
