just the sound stops and can only get it back for a few moments after i go into advanced sound properties and test the sound and and i also forgot to say im using the usb version of the modi instead of the optical.

Try the modi and magni on a different comp and see if it does the same thing. Schiit is dumb anyway so if it's defective send it back for a refund and pick up an o2. Or even just save your money and stick with onboard because 558s are not hard to drive.

I'm kind of curious, why is schiit dumb? I know they've done some dumb things in the past (like any manufacturer), but I've always been under the impression that the modi/magni stack was good value.

Meh I'm probably overly biased lol. I'm staying away from them for pretty much forever because of the whole mess with their Asgard amp killing headphones but I think the Schiit stack looks really ugly and the gain problems is an issue for me.

There was some drama awhile back when their Asgard amp was outputting huge amounts of voltage at power-off - enough voltage to physically warp or destroy headphone drivers. Basically, Schiit engaged in a lot of hand-waving and didn't directly acknowledge the problem although they eventually fixed it with the Asgard 2. The lack of transparency has been a turn-off for some. Another part of the problem is that they are a head-fi sponsor, and many staff at head-fi were complicit in shutting down open discussion of the issue on their forum.

I think it's particularly disappointing as otherwise they seem to have decent customer service. Personally, I like the look of their stuff. And of course the stack is cheaper than the O2/ODAC.

Only slightly. The cheapest O2/ODAC is $240 which is $40 more expensive than the modi/magni.

Well we can debate all day about whether or not $40 is a slight amount of money or not. So lets not.

I'd heard about that drama on nwavguy's blog. Disappointing really, but they corrected the issue once they finally acknowledged it. Though that acknowledgement took farm longer than it should of.

I've heard generally positive things from Schiit otherwise, and the modi/magni are competent products. Not sure what the reason was for criticising Schiit for what otherwise seems like a random hardware failure, so just wanted to know NannerBeans' reasoning.

It's one of the reasons that I dislike head-fi. Not only is it a haven for the mouth-breathing contingent, but the management is clearly giving sponsors preferential treatment. I believe that exacerbated the Asgard fuck-up.

I couldn't agree more. When you see the video deforming the drivers on a headphone it's impossible to disregard that, yet somehow it still happened. I still find Head-Fi useful though, but I would never just use it as my single point of information.

Still, Schiit could've handled that better.
