just purchased an huawei ont and logged in it has upstream port and what does it does?

If I understand correctly that is the one that connects it to the router or whatever switch/network device you have above it in the hierarchy

why would i connect it to a router its a combo device

This device is small enough that it could be broadly categorized as a "travel router." You can connect it to a main router if you are traveling, or you would connect that upstream port to the modem directly if this is your main router. It is basically your WAN port no matter how you use it.
