Subwoofer connection issue

I am not sure what I am missing with this connection, but here is what I have going on.

I have a Yamaha AVENTAGE RX-A740 receiver and with the speakers I purchased they also had a premier acoustic pa 120 sub. The sub only has two ports in the back. Standard red and white RCA (white in/ red out). The receiver has two subwoofer pre-out connections. I tried using a y split cable (RCA to single for the receiver) and no luck. I tried a single standard sub-woofer cable, also no luck. I am confused as to what is causing the lack of signal. When I touch the connectors to the outer shield, it does give me a rumble, but when plugged in, nothing. The touching provides the stereotypical constant rumble from the signal. Anyone have an idea as to what I am missing as I have never had such an issue from a receiver to sub. I'm sure it is something simple, but I am just missing it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

you need to connect subwoofer-out to subwoofer-in(red) (not out on subwoofer)

I have denon  arv recieved and had to do room calibration for receiver to use subwoofer

I have done that. I tried connecting to both and single. Neither provided a signal. I tried the setup menu to see if it was an issue in the settings and still nothing. I know the sub works given what was produced with the contact. Just can't get it to register it being connected otherwise

Another quick guess, my reciver won't turn on sub when sound level is under 30%.

Check the manual for your receiver, didn't find any setup is required, but can you set up like speaker size/location from receiver? For mine I have to set them manually to use them or calibrate, please check that again

the issue is probably not the wire. Two things to check:
1. Receiver settings: Go into the Yamaha setup menu → Speaker → Configuration and make sure Subwoofer = Yes and a crossover for example 80Hz is set. If the sub is disabled in the menu, it won’t output anything no matter how you connect it.
2. Type of subwoofer: The Premier Acoustic PA120 is actually a passive subwoofer no built-in amplifier. The Sub Pre-Out on your RX-A740 only sends a low-level signal and needs an active/powered sub or an external amp. If your PA120 doesn’t have its own power plug and volume knob, you’ll need a separate subwoofer amplifier to make it work.
That’s why you get the rumble when touching the connector signal is there, but nothing plays when connected normally, the sub has no amp to drive it.

IIRC, the subwoofer is typically enabled by default, but definitely check the speaker configuration menu to make sure. Also check if the front speakers are set for 'small' (even if you have towers/large speakers). On the front of the receiver, assuming you have it on an input that has audio, you should see the lit up speakers that are configured on the right side of the display under the volume level indicator (by default, -db's). There should be a 'SW' icon lit up in the middle. If it's not, the subwoofer is off in configuration. You only need a single RCA from the subwoofer pre-out on the receiver to your subwoofer in (white RCA). The secondary output on the receiver is if you have a second subwoofer. Try both outputs on the receiver, I suppose it's possible one is bad? Is it a brand new receiver or used? Once it's hooked up and enabled, try the test tones and see if you get any sound out of the sub.

But as @FilipposTechGR said, if the subwoofer is truly passive, you will need an amp. But if that is the case, you wouldn't be getting the static/'thump' when 'grounding out' the input RCA.

Exactly, that SW icon on the receiver confirms the sub channel is enabled. If it’s still silent, then it really comes down to whether the PA120 is passive needs an external amp or powered. Without an amp, the receiver’s pre-out alone won’t drive it.

First google search I found calls it active

If it's the same as this Ebay listing then it is active and needs to have a single RCA connection to the "IN".  I seam to remember something about subwoofer cables being different? But rather certain I've used just one half of a standard RCA cable in a pinch.

Audio go Brrrrrr

Yes, I have the setup with the sub active and have gone through test tones and no luck. It is an active subwoofer with its own power. Has its own volume, phase, and crossover knobs. I have done receiver setups before and never had this issue. This is why I am at a loss why this particular one doesn't seem to respond. Why I have come to the forums. I have tried both outputs on the receiver with the same results. This is a used setup since I have backed away from my usual habit of buy expensive new equipment when my needs don't necessitate most of the modern bells and whistles as it were, which is why I grabbed some older equipment, but still suitable for my output needs and expansion.

-snip-

Do you have access to another receiver and/or subwoofer for testing? Since you're getting the 'thump' from grounding out the RCA to the subwoofer, it seems like the sub/LFE out may be dead on the receiver. RCA cable seems to be fine. Check the speaker level settings in the receiver as well. It's possible previous owner had turned the subwoofer level all the way down because they didn't know they could just disable it. Setup > Speaker Setup > down 2x, Level, and scroll down until you get to SWFR
