IMG_0669.thumb.jpeg.6bc467993744bf26a9b42bc9fff1c091.jpegSo long story short, I found this gigantic Samsung TV on the side of the road. Turned it on, it works fine except for some kind of screen damage. Is there an easy fix here, or at least something that would make the damage less noticeable?

I’m hoping it’s not too bad since you can see the entire image just fine but I am completely outside my realm of expertise. It looks almost like there’s some kind of liquid in there.

Nope. You found out why it was on the side of the road, alright!

Tbf, I have a burner laptop (got it for literally $10 USD) I travel with to remote into work. Has similar screen issues (hence the price). I read spreadsheets, pdfs, and other documents where picture perfection isn't required and that kind of defect is very usable in that scenario. If it could actually have a purpose for you, give it a second life!

Dreaming of the day when my brain cell doesn't betray me.

Looks like it got wet, or somebody doused it with spray cleaner at one point.

In order to fix this, you would have to take the LCD panel itself apart and dry the layers of backlight diffuser plastic. Even then, it probably won't go back together absolutely perfectly.

(And if it's an edge-lit model, it's only a matter of time before the LED strips at the bottom of the panel go bad. They'll overheat and scorch the diffuser plastic, making dark columns that won't go away until you replace both the LED strips and the plastic.)

I sold my soul for ProSupport.

Yeah I agree. This doesn't appear to be an issue with the matrix itself but rather the diffusion layer.

Honestly, seeing how it was free I think it's worth taking apart and see if you can't repair or clean those layers.

If nothing else you can gain some education on how a LCD panel is put together.

ask me about my homelab

I got some experience with Samesung TVs and unless they changed the designed recently you'll break some plastic tabs while opening.

If you want to use that TV, you should use it as is. If you want to thinker with some lectronics, that a free toy you picked up 🙂

Have a nice day !

That’s not liquid behind the glass, it’s panel damage, the LCD layers or diffuser sheet got delaminated/cracked common if it sat in damp storage or was dropped.
Unfortunately:
You can’t fix it with cleaning or drying; the damage is inside the panel stack.
Replacing the LCD panel costs more than a new TV.
Best you can do is live with it or try to disguise it e.g. lower brightness/contrast so the blotches are less visible.
