Budget (including currency): ~1000 EUR

Country: Hungary (amazon.de or like is applicable for prices)

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: 4K gaming/1080p gaming

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc):

Hey guys,

I’ve got two gaming PCs and I’m looking for advice on how to upgrade them smartly without overspending. I’d like to prioritize performance on my 4K setup, but I don’t want to throw money away if I don’t have to.

PC A (1080p gaming, maybe 1440p in the future)

MB: ASUS TUF B450M-PLUS

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 1700X w/ Alpenföhn Brocken 3

RAM: HyperX Predator 2×8GB DDR4 3333MHz

GPU: MSI RTX 2070 Armor 8G

PSU: FSP Raider S 550W

I’m about to get an ASUS ROG Strix RTX 3090 OC for free from a friend (he upgraded to a 5090). It’s been freshly repasted, fans replaced, and has only been used for gaming.

PC B (4K gaming on LG C1 OLED)

MB: MSI B450 Tomahawk MAX

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 3700X w/ Wraith Prism

RAM: Corsair Vengeance RGB PRO 2×8GB DDR4 3200MHz

GPU: PNY RTX 4080 SUPER 16GB XLR8

PSU: Corsair RM650x

The 3090 is way too much for the old low-end 550W FSP unit, and probably also pushing it for the RM650x. So a new PSU is a must on both I guess. I’m torn between sticking with AM4 and grabbing a 5000X3D CPU but I find them expensive for a dead platform, or going AM5 for a longer term upgrade path. I don’t want to sink money into the wrong place, so ideally the least amount of upgrades, but with performance gains where it matters, mainly PC B with the 4K OLED.

Parts I’ve been looking at:

MB: GIGABYTE B850 AORUS Elite WIFI7 – 224.68 EUR (or maybe cheaper B850 Eagle WIFI6E - 177.05 EUR)

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 9600X – 201.70 EUR

Cooler: Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120SE ARGB – 40.34 EUR

RAM: G.SKILL 32GB DDR5 6000MT/s CL30 Flare X5 – 120.46 EUR

PSU: CORSAIR RM1000x – 181.32 EUR

I feel very much overwhelmed with options and don’t want to waste money, so any advice would be super appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

I'd definitely see what other 1000w units are available, 181 Euro is pricey for a PSU these days.  I like the Eagle board as well.

I think I'd give her your 3700X machine, with the 3090.   I like the AM5 setup with the 4080S for you.

If you can find ANY 5000x3d chip, even a 5600x3d let us know the price.  Definitely an upgrade over the 3700X but not a huge deal if you keep the 3700X.

I do find it vastly interesting that a friend will just give you 750-1000 Euros tho.

On the PSU front the best comparable one I could find is NZXT C1000 Gold ATX 3.1 - 158.05 EUR, or 1200W for 180.25. Otherwise, its about the same 20-30 EUR saving for worse quality PSUs, which is just not worth it IMO.

For CPU, the best price I can find is 201 EUR for a used 5700x3d without warranty.

Well, some friends are just built different I suppose. He's more like a brother to me, than a friend to be fair.

yeah, keep the PSU you selected.

For the 5700X3D, if you have the 201 to spend, I would get it.  It's a solid improvement over the 3700X which isn't that strong of a gaming CPU.
