I have this problem where Windows thinks there's a new controller getting plugged in every half a second but there isn't. It messes with one of my games but not with anything else!

The only way to stop this is to unplug EVERY usb device from the PC.

I have tried the following:
Updating drivers (through windows update and Driver Booster 12(I don't use it normally just thought to try it)
Updating chipset drivers
Reinstalling windows
Updating BIOS

Nothing helps! Everything works perfectly except ONE game, and since I already reinstalled I want to find a solution.

The only time I doesn't do this is after a fresh Windows install, BEFORE updating anything.

I have attached what updates have gone through and what the issues looks like from the game controller menu.

My guess is that one of these driver update that windows makes is causing the issue.

Please ask follow up questions!

sounds like a USB driver issue to me

try to go to your motherboard/laptop manufacturer's page and specifi "support" section of your mobo/laptop model and install at least CHIPSET drivers and USB ports drivers, this could fix your issue.

I already did this. That's what I mean by updating chipset drivers. And I don't see a "USB" driver.

ok i've seen the video and that's kinda weird, it might be one of the cumulative updates that borked something, windows 24h2 is notorious shit from the release so i wouldn't be surprised if this issue is related to the update honestly. the biggest issue is that troubleshoot this to understand which updated borked something is hell, you better start off with a fresh install and NOT update up untill the second tuesday of september, windows releases big patches every second tueday of each month, so it MAYBE will be fixed soon.

it can be either the latest windows update OR the latest GAME update but i would point the finger to windows since 24h2 is pure poop

i don't understand the fact that the issue is present only when playing one game though, which game is it? just to have a more complete situation

Yea I can see it being Windows being GARBAGE. The game is Hitman World of Assassinations. I find it EXTREMELY strange that it doesn't mess with nothing else than that game. I guess I don't hear a USB device connect and disconnect sound effect. I know it isn't my devices since they work on Linux and on Linux the game also works with controllers but playing on Linux is something I've tried and failed and I can't switch soon.

i would put the finger against windows at this point. if it works on linux then it's windows being the biggest poop as usual.

if you need help with linux gaming it's rather easy these days:

DO NOT install proprietary drivers at all
install steam

check lutris github "drivers" section: https://github.com/lutris/lutris/wiki/Installing-drivers/f0f7b52773cc5eaac5e3f78bfe3edc9e9101b309

follow this fast guide for wine dependencies: https://www.gloriouseggroll.tv/how-to-get-out-of-wine-dependency-hell/#:~:text=Summary%3A,use runtimes selectively when needed.&text=If apt-get complains about, steps (update and install).

if you have an xbox controller install "xone" for your distro

if you have a PS controller you might need some research (i don't own one so i can't help much)

keep in mind that sometimes third party wireless controller might not work, if it work wired though you're fine

other then this you're more then free to game, i game on linux since almost 3 years and i have better fps then windows most of the times, give it a try and have some patience because linux learning curve coming from windows might not be easy at first

I have gamed on linux and even specifically Hitman but there is always something wrong. Like my audio not playing or cutting off, Visual bugs or even my keyboard just stopping to work mid session. There is so many little inconveniences that it put me off even though I really want it to be my main OS.

that's weird though, which distro do you have? how did you install the game? how are you running it?

it might be faster to troublshoot these issues on linux rather the windows one in the end...

I used Ubuntu, PopOS, Mint and last Kubuntu. I have the game on Steam so it was dead easy to install and run. It just had problems. IDK

ok so before starting to troubleshoot a game you can check if it's on protonDB and see how people run the game and if they have issues and how they fixed it, sometimes running the game with a specific version of proton can be the way, you might just need to try different versions like "experimental" is something that makes latest game work more then fine usually. here's the protonDB search for hitman, open up the page for your specific game and check how others runs it from steam, this is something that i do normally when the game doesn't run 100% fine standalone, usually simply using proton experimental works fine but some games "require" a tiny bit more tinkering

 https://www.protondb.com/search?q=hitman

if you want to try to fix the issue on linux i can help you out 😄 the windows issue to me is too tied to the update and it's a bit too tedious to fix since you already done prety much everything you could
