Mobo/CPU Upgrade

Hey guys, I've been thinking about upgrading to AM5 and giving my mobo/cpu/ram to my buddy. Of course i'm looking at the Ryzen 7 9800X3D, which i'm looking at Microcenter bundles, here is the link to that bundle I was looking at. If you aren't able to see it for whatever reason, it's the 9800X3D with a ASUS B650-E TUF Gaming WiFi, and G.Skill Flare X5 Series 32GB DDR5-6000 for $600 USD. I've usually always shopped through amazon or newegg(rip), but now that I actually live near a Micro Center, I can actually take up on some of the deals they have. Any input would be amazing.

AMD Ryzen 9 5900x - ROG STRIX B450 Aorus Wifi - 4x8GB 288-Pin DDR4 3000 G.Skill Ripjaws V Series - Corsair RM850x - Founders Edition 3080 TI

Its a good bundle!  I have used G.Skill Flare X5 DDR5 RAM with quite a few different AM5 builds and its always worked great.

I personally run a overclocked 9800X3D on a ASUS TUF B650 PLUS WIFI and its been completely stable.

The motherboard has been used with a 7700x since 2022 and not a single problem to report.

I live in Norway and I really wish we had a MicroCenter here, the bundles they offer are great 🙂

There really isn't much 'input' to be had here. If you want to upgrade, upgrade.

The bundle is great.

The 9800X3D is significantly faster than a 5900x in gaming.

For clarity, you're primarily a gamer, right?

I'm mentioning it because even though the 9800X3D is much faster than your 5900X for single thread and gaming, it is not for heavily multithreaded work.

I've purchased that bundle and it's performing fantastic, just like every other 9800X3D bundle 🙂

In all honesty, it's a great deal.  I may opt for another one for my 9900K machine soon.

I think Newegg also has a bundle going but I may be mistaken on the CPU aspect.

But can't go wrong with the MC one, just note the RAM may be CL36 not CL30.  Which won't matter to the 9800X3D or any X3D chip really.  They don't benefit from latency differences much at all.

So CL30 isn't that much of an upgrade from CL36 in this instance?

Nope.  You'll find YT vids about it, how the 3D cache doesn't benefit much.

I have CL36 from the 7700X bundle years ago, dropped in a 7800X3D now.  I'd have replaced the RAM if there was an issue or any tangible benefit.

I apologize for bumping this topic. But I was about to go pick this up and ended up looking at upgrades I can get for the bundle. Looking at upgrading the motherboard. Would higher max ram speed matter or benefit me? The Mobo that it comes with ASUS TUF B650-E is 5200 MHz max, and I can upgrade to a MSI X870E Gaming Plus for an extra 50$ that has a max of 5600 MHz.

No. You are not quite understanding here.

The motherboard will run with 6000Mhz CL30 RAM, the 5200Mhz is just the offical support from AMD.

I personally run 6000Mhz CL30 on my ASUS B650 PLUS WIFI without any issues.

90% of AM5 owners run 6000Mhz CL30 as this is the sweetspot, its fast and it will work 🙂

They wouldn't sell the bundle with the 6000Mhz kit if it didnt work.

If you go to the motherboard website, go to support and then memory compatability / QVL list you find this.

You can see plenty of G.Skill kits with supported speed from 6000Mhz up to 7800Mhz even.

You don't have to worry. Buy the bundle with 6000Mhz RAM. It will work 🙂

I am actually buying this exact bundle on Saturday for a friend.

I have built and assisted building at least 70 AM5 systems so far and they have all been with 6000Mhz CL30/32 Kits.

They have all worked at this rated speed 🙂

I apologize! I looked up a comparison website and was curious about the differences. I don't care about WiFi so I don't need WiFi 7 and saw the Ram Speed "max". Thanks again.

Thats just the official support from AMD.

The Motherboard itself will easily run the G.Skill 6000Mhz kit 🙂

Get the ASUS B650E-E TUF Gaming WiFi, 9800X3D and G.Skill Flare X5 Series 32GB DDR5-6000 Kit bundle.

You can safely buy this.

As mentioned, I am picking this bundle up on Saturday with a friend to help build his new system.

The 6000Mhz is the EXPO/XMP speed, its a RAM overclock.  This is something you manually have to enable in the BIOS.

Out of the box the RAM will run at 4800Mhz or 5200Mhz.

if you need help with this, I can assist you. Its just a one button click to enable 6000Mhz.

Ok for sure! XMP has been a pain in the butt for me in my current setup that i've had for a while now. The one base XMP profile that i'm able to choose has always bluescreen'd me. So i'm not even using my RAM at the listed speed of 3000, instead I had to downclock it to 2800 as I am clueless to do anything else. I am very much looking forward to being on this new setup and gifting my buddy my old board. 🙂

Yeah, some people have struggled with XMP on AM4 systems.

I see that you are using 4x8GB and this can be more unstable over 2x16GB kits, especially when using XMP on AM4 systems.

The kit in the MicroCenter bundle has the G.Skill RAM that has the EXPO profiles, these are designed for AM5/AMD systems.

Its AMD's version of XMP but for their own systems.

XMP will most likely work on AM5 and vice versa but no guarantee.

I have personally used XMP RAM on Ryzen 7000/9000 without issues.  Some kits even come with both XMP/EXPO profiles as well.

I was using XMP as a general word for RAM overclocking profiles, for whichever my mobo used, which I think is XMP. As long as I can reliably get the stated speed on my kits I will be a happy camper.

If you like to tinker you can always remove 2 sticks and see if XMP will work at 3000Mhz with 2x8GB.

Maybe your friend can pick up some 2x16 3200Mhz kits to get some more performance 🙂

EXPO is new for AM5 so you most likely still use XMP profiles for your old AM4 systems.

But 4 sticks can be problematic at the XMP / Overclocked speed as it can be more unstable than running 2 sticks. Thats what I was getting at.

Gotcha, so since i'm getting a 2x16 kit in this bundle and in the future I get the wild hair that I want 64 gb. It will always be better to go with 2x32's? Instead of just buying another 2x16? I have heard that having all channels filled that it was an issue back when AM5 launched and I figured it would be ironed out more. I didn't know it was a more general thing, which makes sense .

AM5, Ryzen 7000/9000 absolutely HATE 4 stick of RAM.

Even getting it to post with 4 sticks can be problematic even at non EXPO/XMP speeds.

So yes, its almost a guarantee that you have to buy a new 2x32GB kit instead of adding on another 2x16.

This is the reason why we have started to see DDR5 2x24GB and 2x48GB EXPO kits so we can have a bit more memory on AM5 while still keeping to 2 sticks.

I apologize! I looked up a comparison website and was curious about the differences. I don't care about WiFi so I don't need WiFi 7 and saw the Ram Speed "max". Thanks again.

Jesuss christ, stop looking at those comparison sites!  They're shitty AI bullshit without ANY context or understanding.

Oh, and to put it in 1st grader terms:

GO TO MICROCENTER AND BUY THE BUNDLE WE DISCUSSED!!!!!

It was meant in jest.

It's good you're asking questions.  Never hurts to add confidence in a purchase.

But also understand we are recommending good stuff, we wouldn't short you with slow ram or anything .

To that point, you can see our machines in signatures and profiles to give you even more confidence.  We out our money where our mouths are 👍
