Hi everyone,

I recently built a new PC (about 2 months ago), and everything had been working perfectly — I could play games and use it without any issues.

Today, however, I realized that Windows 11 wasn’t able to update. It kept showing errors about corrupted or broken files, and overall, the OS seemed unstable or damaged.

To fix it, I decided to do a clean install. I used my USB stick with Windows 10 (which I had purchased about 6 years ago) and wiped all existing partitions on my drive to ensure a fresh start. I then proceeded with the installation of Windows 10.

After the install, everything was running fine. I began installing the latest Windows updates as usual (updates when you freshly installed windows). The updates downloaded and installed without any errors, and as expected, the system prompted me to restart.

But after restarting, my system got stuck in VGA BOOT and wouldn’t proceed further.

Just to be clear — everything was working perfectly before I reinstalled Windows 10 and all of the updates.

thank you everyone for all the nice answers.

This issue is definitely a hardware issue, and the OS getting unstable on such a new system is unusual.

Usually failure at VGA boot means the system wasn't able to initialize the GPU, considering the instability you experienced earlier i think the issue is likely to be something that can cause both - Like the motherboard, CPU or RAM.

You will need to test your components independently.

re seat your gpu and all your ram. If that doesnt work 1 stick in 2 slot from the cpu.

Bois should be immune to windows update so its not windows issues if you can see bios.

Clever buggers will be along later to help until then ya stuck with me 🙂

Do you have onboard graphics on your CPU? Your motherboard seems to have a DP port. Can you remove your GPU and see if you get output there?

Hi,

I’ve just tried what you told me to test and it doesn’t work unfortunately. What are my other options or what could it possibly be that makes my PC stuck in VGA BOOT

THX

Hi,

I’ve just performed a few tests to further isolate the issue.

  • First, I removed the GPU entirely and attempted to boot the system using integrated graphics (if available). I still received the VGA BOOT error.

  • Next, I tested the RAM by removing one of the two sticks:

    • I removed the module from slot B2 and tried booting with the remaining stick in A2 — the VGA error persisted.

    • I then swapped the sticks (still using a single stick in A2) — the issue remained the same.

Finally, I reinstalled the GPU and attempted to boot again with only one RAM stick in slot A2, but I’m still getting the VGA BOOT error.

At this point, what would be the next recommended steps to identify the cause of the issue?

Thank you in advance for your help.

What CPU so you have?,

Also, Try switching the RAM DIMMs and see if that changes anything.

Confirmation is needed to whether you have an iGPU.

Hi. I have the Ryzen 7 9800x3D

So the issue is probably either the CPU or the motherboard, You need to test both of them.

Did you try to clear CMOS?, Maybe it would help.

Hi, thanks for the quick response.

I’m still new in this world of computers. Can you tell me how to test if it’s the CPU or the motherboard that is the creating the VGA BOOT issue ?

Yes I cleared the CMOS but unfortunately didn’t helped 😞

As always, thx for the response and the help.

It’s a long shot, but do you have a spare Ryzen 7000 or 9000 CPU?
