Hi everybody!
I'm having quite a strange problem with my PC, I don't know how to really explain it so I shall start with where I first discovered it. I was just playing some games as normal in the evening after school, then suddenly about 30 seconds into a game of GTA IV, the ENTIRE system crashed, displaying this colourful pixel pattern across my screen, I've attached a picture of what it looked like. At first I just assumed GTA IV had broken itself, restarted the computer, and went off to play something else, got again about 30 seconds into a game of L4D2 and the same thing occurred. So I was kind of confused at this stage, fearing hardware issues, upon the system restarting, went and played some CS:GO and played for roughly 3ish hours without a single hiccup, no performance issues, no weird things occurring, ran perfectly just as it always did. I've narrowed it down, this will occur in SOME games, definitely not all, I don't know what causes this but either way. This was about, 2 months ago? I made a topic on here asking why my Steam games were crashing, maybe someone could find it I dunno. But skipping ahead to now, the problem has got a hell of a lot worse, what's weird is it's VERY random, very inconsistent. It consistently crashes the same games, and the others all still work fine, but now the system sometimes will do this upon starting Windows, it'll get through the boot process fine, but will crash IMMEDIATELY upon loading the Desktop, or sometimes it'll load the Desktop then about 30 or so seconds in it'll crash again. Right now onto what I've tested, I ran PRIME on the CPU and MSI Kombustor on the GPU for roughly 24 hours, funnily enough at the same time, and no issues were reported, nor did the GPU show any sign of struggle. And before everyone asks I did run these a few times for the same amount of time, no problems. As for temps? CPU tops out completely at around 54c, will never go higher than that, and the GPU around 70/75c, and has never gone higher. I also ran memtest, thinking it's a RAM issue and that's what I suspect due to the weirdness of the problem and the randomness, and I've run memtest about 8 times all for a day or more, and it will normally report about 1 error, with the most I've ever got being 5, and sometimes it just won't report anything. Oh and I thought it'd be good to mention, after a session of memtest, upon returning to Windows (Even if I only ran memtest for a couple mins) it will normally boot just fine and get into Windows without a hitch, however the same issues with the games ect still occur. Sorry for the amount of typing, I just thought I better list everything I've found. The system is not overclocked or anything, all stock at stock speeds. But yeah ANY help would be fantastic. :)

My (ancient) monster broken system: ;)
An old Athlon 64 X2 6000+
4GB Corsair DDR2 @ 800Mhz
GTX 280 stock card
Corsair GS700, overkill so bad but it was a insane deal at the time, so I picked it up
An ancient Maxtor 250GB IDE drive as a boot drive, surprisingly once it's spun up it's pretty quick ...
WD Green 1TB for storage, all my games are on this drive.

Before anyone mentions, I have 0 cash atm, so a new system is entirely out of the question right now, and hey, this still runs great. Even with this going on, played Bioshock Infinite at 1080p Ultra with about 40ish FPS.

Thats the gpu either overheating or dying....

I thought that too, but I'm fairly sure it's not overheating, as this'll happen straight from a cold boot, in fact when the system has been off for a while it's worse, and I ran loads of tests like Kombustor, and Furmark at one point to stress it as much as I could for like 24 hours most of the time, never reached above 70ish degrees and didn't display any kind of glitches or artifacts or anything, I dunno, I'll look into it. :P

have you tried re installing windows? sometimes things like this just pop up with no real resolution.
Try re installing windows (and try and get all the drivers onto a flash drive before hand.)

since your games are on a separate drive, you should not have to re install them,

I haven't tried that actually ... And mentioning that, launched Steam yesterday for the first time in about a month, and it reported all of my games as not installed on the system at all ... Even though they're all on that drive still. Had to find it again in the Steam Library folders thing, and now none of them will update like at all. -.- But yeah I'll give the reinstalling Windows a go.

i would go ahead and try that.

As for the steam games, if you hit play on them they ~should~ start re installing, without having to download anything.

Aha, it wouldn't let me escape that easily :P Should but didn't. :P

hmm. Maybe the drive was not properly mounted randomly off a boot, and steam defaulted its directory to the C drive?

Heh, i dont know. but let me know how the re install goes.
