NAS Build Recommendations

Hi all,

 

Looking for recommendations for a NAS build. Was looking at this configuration that I put together on scorptec quickly the other night. I already have a power supply from an old computer that I can use. The case is probably a bit overkill so that might change. I was looking at some qnap and synology NAS's with 4-8 bays for comparison and they are all more expensive than what I can put together so I think I might go with a built NAS.

 

Was mainly looking for case recommendations and motherboard and CPU.

 

Any recommendations would be helpful,

Sure this should work fine.

 

You probably want a seperate boot drive depending on the OS used. 

 

I'd generally get fewer bigger drives if you can. Easier to upgrade, less power usage.

I have a m.2 laying around that I will probably use as the boot drive.

 

I'll have a look at different drive capacities, this was only me having a quick look at different configurations.

 

I forgot to put it in the original post but does anyone have any recommendations on OS?

I'd go with a much better Ryzen 5xxx series CPU.   Lots of DDR4 3200cl16 and a cheaper motherboard.

 

What you bought is an odd mix of shit CPU and expensive motherboard/RAM for a NAS>

 

I currently use this:

 

Plex: AMD Ryzen 9 5900XT 16c/32t - Gigabyte B550M AORUS Elite AX - TeamGroup T-Force Vulcan 64GB 3200CL16 - MSI 1050Ti 4GB - Crucial P3 Plus 500GB + TeamGroup MP44L 2TB (Game) + WD Red NAS 4TBx2 (Plex) - TP-Link AC1200 PCIe Wifi - EVGA SuperNova 650 P2 - Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120SE - ASUS Prime AP201

 

But it was a Ryzen 5600 and 16GB RAM prior that did everything overkill, except for game servers.

I'd rather have the 12100 here. iGPU to save the dGPU, and much better transcoding than almost any other GPU. Better for transocding, and lower power so seems like a much better option here. 

 

I'd stay away form the pcie wifi, use the router for wifi, wifi almost never makes sense on a NAS>

Okay, keep the 12100 but move back to DDR4 to save money.

If you don't mind the ecosystem, look at the qnap and synologys again but check eBay for used ones.  I'm on my third (or forth?) used 12 bay Synology NAS and got great deals on all of them from eBay.  The trick was setting up alerts for the model or type I was looking for and then being patient enough to wait a month or three for someone to sell at a good price.

It will mainly be used just for storage but I will probably run home assistant on it as well.

Windows is easiest.  I use 11 for my nas Plex game server.
