i want to make a nas with a budget of 300 dollars. I have heard from other sources that my budget is to low for building it by getting parts so if someone can reccomend a prebuilt computer that i would probably get off of ebay that has a couple drive bays in it i would be grate ful. I have one 10tb drive that is probably nearing its end of life so I am going to need 2-3 disks. I want just over 10tb of storage or more if you can get it. I want to use true nas scale which can make use of lots of ram. I am fine getting a prebuilt and upgrading it. I am near the new jersey micro center. I am going to run some light apps like immich, jellyfin, and some other light weight apps

10TB of storage in that budget is pretty tight. Probably get a used buiness desktop, and some refurb 10TB drives on there.

TrueNAS really doesn't need much ram, 8GB should be fine for a basic gigabit NAS.

What do you think of this?

it leaves 200 dollars for storage do you think this will be good enough.

i think I found a better option

and for the hard drives i found a good deal on 6tb drives so I could probably get like 4 of these drives in a raidz1 or raid z2. For hard drives mounts if there is not enough I can 3d print them.  Do you think that these would be good enough for about 320 dollars in total

Those 2 ebay links seem the same for me.

I'd generally get fever bigger drives if you can.

That system should work fine.

Your product links are terrible 🙂  For example, all you need is https://www.ebay.com/itm/157083467954?  or https://www.ebay.com/itm/285391907983?

Check out this search for used Synology NAS that may fit the bill.  Drives are going to eat up most of your budget it you want 10TB to work with.  For a dual bay NAS that would mean two 10TB drives to give you a Raid 1 array.  Or if you get a 4 bay NAS that would be four 4TB drives in a Raid 5.  So keep that in mind when budgeting.  Be sure to look at recertified drives that include at least a 1 year warranty.

But I'm just talking out my ass.

I once built my server using a refurbished commercial PC from HP in 2022, which cost about $100 excluding storage. It's even getting cheaper since then as the processor has a 75% discount ATM.

  • Platform: HP EliteDesk 800 G3 SFF, including motherboard/chassis/power. Has two 3.5-inch bays.
  • Processor: Pentium G4600. Still decent for 4K HEVC transcoding in Jellyfin.
  • RAM: Samsung DDR4 4GB kits x2. Two slots remaining on the motherboard, allowing for upgrades.
  • Boot drive: Optane M10 16GB. Dirty cheap but responsive.

Then I spent ~$200 for a refurbished 16TB and a brand-new 4TB spinner.😏
