Hi, I am having some issues overclocking my CPU. The system is stable when not overclocking.

i7 4770k Stock = 3.5Ghz (3.9Ghz Turbo)

Maximus VI Hero
16GB Corsair Vengeance Low Profile RAM (1600Mhz on the box but runs at 1333Mhz default, unless modified in the BIOS using XMP)

750W Corsair PSU

I am currently using Intel's Extreme Tuning Utility to OC. I experience the same issues in the BIOS however.

If I change the reference clock from 100Mhz to 105Mhz the system freezes and powers off.

If I change the Processor Cache Ratio from 39x to 42x and the multipliers on all cores from 39x to 42x, the system blue screens 2 minutes into the stress test.

I am using a Cooler Master Seidon 120V water cooler, I admit it is not amazing but keeps the CPU at about 70C under full load, about 20C lower than the stock cooler. Idles at about 45C. I have ordered a Noctua fan for it tomorrow so it should drop about another 5C.

Does anyone know any reason why this might be happening? Do I need to change the voltage offset? Admittedly I am new to OCing, but I am not after anything spectacular here.

Id never touch the bus speed, im also new to OCing however i got to 4.4 happily with very little voltage tinker, i used this, personally i would look for a guide for your mobo and processor, im using a i5 3570k ( ivy) and pro 4 asrock so i used this http://www.overclock.net/t/1198504/complete-overclocking-guide-sandy-bridge-ivy-bridge-asrock-edition for short it says to change multiplier till no boot then add some voltage... good read tho.

Thanks guys, I tried upping the voltage to up to 1.29v to no avail. It did increase the temps to about 85C before crashing.

So I went back into the BIOS and used "CPU Level Up", set it to "4.2G".

Now the voltage is just 1.216v, but I noticed my old Bus Speed was 99.88Mhz, and now it is 100.16Mhz.

I passed the stress test at 4.2Ghz, reaching 80C on one of the cores.

I hope to get a H100i soon and won't be pushing the system to these temps for long.

Thanks for the help, I am a bit confused to be honest :)

i have a h100i be careful when installing if the backplate is loose you will have to install some rubber washers on the back, as the backplate was preventing my h100i making physical contact with the cpu so i was idle in the high 30s and ocing was impossible. good luck and enjoy

To be honest, a similar issue occurred with my current cooler. I think this accounts for the high temps somewhat and so I thought a new cooler in general would help. I will be sure not to get too ahead of myself though, thanks for the advice :)

Just wanted to post an update, two things happened today:

My Noctua fan came, I now have a push/pull configuration on my little water cooler.

I learnt how to OC.

Now I'm running at 4.3Ghz, maxing at 78C.

All I have to do to hopefully get to 4.5Ghz, and lower those temps a little, is get a H100 :D

Thanks for the help!
