TLDR: Any Chance to Adapt my old 7900XT to my Laptop, not to Power the Laptop Display, but an external Monitor

Β

Hey Guys! After fruitlessly combing both Reddit and this Forum here, I am at a loss. Since Starting Expedition 33 (try it if you have not!) I enjoy playing on my Couch with my TV and Surround Setup. Currently I plug my Asus ROG Flow X16 (2022 with the Ryzen and 3060) directly via HDMI in the TV. Now Fan Noise and Performance is an issue, and that the Laptop only supporst HDMi 2.0.

Β

it HAS the Proprietary ROG X Connector, but it Appears Asus no longer sells those E-GPUs. Razer Core X requires Thunderbolt, which the Asus does not Have (USB 3.2 GEN 2).

Β

Now: Is there any way in Hell I can just use the CPU from the Laptop, connect to a Dock with my old 7900XT and enjoy my Games with more Frames and in Blissfull Silence? πŸ˜„Β

Β

It is NOT required, that the GPU powers the Laptop Screen. It would be soly delegated to TV Duty.

Β

Thank you in Advance and have a pleasant day ❀️

The crazy thing about those enclosures is they tend to cost $200-400.

Β

For that kind of money, you can just about slap together a very cheap AM4 build, or probably more prudently, pick up a used gaming PC with a weak or no graphics card.

No, can't use an external GPU from a "simple" USB port, it has to support Thunderbolt/USB4.

well... technically you can with a pci-e bridge chip but no one makes one you can just buy and use for a gpu because it would be ungodly slow.
in my experience, even if you take the load off the laptop's internal gpu with an external one, the cpu is more than willing to take up that extra cooling and your noise level stays the same.
if you truly want to do it, your best bet is to try to source a used Asus dock which uses that proprietary connector you have.
