I'm trying to put a new SSD into my PC, and I was attempting to remove the GPU because I have some relatively fat fingers. My issue currently is that the latch holding the GPU down is either broken, stuck or I'm just not doing it right. It seems to kind of wiggle a little. I also suspect there might be another piece holding it down under the GPU ( not sure what that piece is, circled in blue in the images). I've tried using other strategies like guitar picks or rulers and I know you have to press latch down first and then push.I got a Lenovo Tower 5I off Facebook marketplace place for $1150 CAD with a 4070 and 7700. Is there another piece holding it down or is it just user error?

For TLDR: GPU doesn't come out, trying to install new SSD. Latch moves a little and the screws holding it down originally are also removed. Blue circled piece might be holding it down. Lenovo Tower 5I Pre-built.

Note:

GPU support thingy screws removed (images)

The IO thing is removed (images)

The latch moves pretty freely up and down like a millimeter

In one of the images you can see a little black thing circled in blue under the GPU not sure what it is might be the reason why.

MOBO: Lenovo AM5P21ML2, model KB650 NM-1891, Revision 1

GPU: Lenovo Desktop GEFORCE RTX 4070

any advice from pro PC builders is appreciated (I think it might do with the little black thing at the bottom.)

Somewhat sure the blue circled thing is just chipset heatsink.

Chances are the PCIE clip is still in locked mode

edit:

Dunno if the pic below is the correct motherboard, but if it is.
Then yeah, chances are it's chipset heatsink.

Also, basing on the picture above and your picture, i think you can install SSD on the 2nd M.2 slot without removing the gpu, it will be tight room to work with and may require a long screwdriver, but should be doable based on what I see in the pic.

Since there's no easy answer to remove the GPU

Not much that I can tell you to try but :

Push the GPU towards the motherboard to make the clip latches on

Then using a flathead screwdriver covered with fabric, push the clip towards the motherboard a bit hard. Careful not to slip though.

This is what unlocked PCIE lock look like

image.png.97b0062346c29c77b481b055e9ce3af0.png

So... use that picture as reference as to at what angle / at which section of the latch you should push it. What I usually do is place my tool of choice at the rightside half section of the lock.

After it's unlocked, slowly wiggle out the GPU, it may be quite snug.

For some configuration you may feel the GPU moves away from the motherboard a tiny bit near the pcie lock section when it's unlocking. I feel it on one of my system, didn't feel on other.

edit : Also, I had one situation where the clip moved towards locking a bit (half locked) when I'm wiggling out GPU making it unable to be pulled out until I push and keep the clip back using my right hand.

Anyway, it's not the end of the world if the clip end up breaking. Pretty sure there's a shit ton of people that broke it. Broke mine on my old motherboard.

What you really need to be careful about is the chance of slipping and then damaging your motherboard.
