Hi! First time posting here, so please correct me if any terms are incorrect!

I want to gift a NAS to my brother who has tons of photo/video files. I'm unsure whether I can find an old PC that allows him to buy more HDDs as needed and set it up using TrueNAS or if something like a Synology  (if there are more affordable options pls lmk) is best. I'm not totally sure how much data he has but he's been storing everything on an external 4TB Hard drive for now

I've set up an old OEM into a TrueNAS Core machine for me to store data from our family restaurant (Canyon Road if you're ever in NYC!), that I'm pulling via SFTP. So I'm capable of setting it up, I just don't know if finding a PC like that is a realistic goal.

My main concerns are limiting costs, but not at the expense of expandability. I also know he wouldn't care about redundancy, and there's no redundancy in the OEM I have. Not sure if thats helpful at all

Does your brother edit from multiple systems? If not its likely cheaper and faster to get internal/USB drives instead of a NAS. There is also less to go wrong and less power usage, and typically cheaper. You can get a >20TB external HDD, and I'd get one of those if you wan tto store more data.

Do you want to be support for this system, this is a great way to sign up to be tech support so just be away of that.

I'd make sure he has a backup plan just in case.

He edits from a macbook and an iPad. Sometimes he'll do work with the pen and once he's done transfers to the macbook with airdrop.

I'm already tech support so that's not a concern lol

He's complained about the speed of his laptop so I thought a NAS would be helpful if that's where he stored programs as well. But it may just be that he needs a new laptop.

Sounds like a new external hard drive and USB dongle for the iPad is probably the most affordable solution here hough.
