Hello everyone, I am a bit confused about front panel type-c port which I hope you guys can help me with.

I am planning to buy MSI B850 Tomahawk MAX WIFI, as I can see in it's spec and manual it has a 20Gbps front panel Type-C header (JUSBC1 in the manual), do I need to buy a pc case that specifically says it has a 20Gbps Type-C port, or will a 10Gbps one will do ?

If a 10Gbps Type-C port is viable, does it means the port will only perform as 10Gbps port, or will I still get 20Gbps ?

This is confusing the heck out of me, because from what I managed to google about front panel Type-C connector and header, they all look the same between 20Gbps and 10Gbps.

B850 Tomahawk Max WIFI manual:

The case I want to buy :

Antec Flux Pro

A viable option if 20Gbps port is crucial : Fractal North XL

Honestly I kinda prefer the Antec, which specified 10Gbps Type-C port, hence why I am asking this kinda question.

This is a weakest link scenario so it will cap out at 10 which is frankly more than you need for pretty much anything

The connectors themselves are the same, yes. This is to allow wide compatibility

IS 20gig crucial for your specific usecase?

Ah said that to let people know the pc case in my list in case 20Gbps port&connector is needed to fully utilize the 20Gbps header. Sorry, my english is not really good.

But yes, though not used too often I do have a 20Gbps portable nvme.

The price of the two cases is pretty much the same here.

Also, forgive me for asking something that isn't in-line with my original question;

Do you know whether rear Type-C port on motherboard without "D" or "DP" logo supports DP Alt ? Or is it only those with the logo supports it ?

Fair, but even if you're moving 1TB of data, you're only saving 7 minutes by getting a 20Gbit port. I'd recommend getting the case you want, and if it has a 10gig port, you could just get a pcie slot adapter for 20$, or a whole PCIe card for 30$ (this is US prices and products, but they should be available wherever you are for similar prices)

It's *extremely* rare to find DP alt mode on mobo USBC ports. It's pretty complex computing. You can get an add in board to do it via PCIe

I think it will perform as a 10gb port if you have a 10gb case.

I don't know about data speeds but I believe USB-C has a handshake protocol that has each end of the chain confirm what the other ends are capable of delivering. I'd explicitly check to make sure it has a 20Gbps port, otherwise, say hello to 10Gbps (which is probably fine if we're being honest)

For what it's worth, I'm at the point of "just throw a thunderbolt dock" at it since I've managed to get a bunch for free or cheap. You run ONE cable, then you have essentially a very nice hub on your desk in the "RIGHT" spot.
USB-4 is effectively thunderbolt these days so good things can happen. This handles display port out and a number of other things AND you can swap it between devices (work laptop, personal laptop, desktop, etc.)
