Hi everyone im looking to upgrade from my i7-7700 to something slightly newer i was looking at 12th gen intel cpus and a ryzen 7 5700 are these two gens comparable ive been out of the tech game for awhile.

id like somthing thats still the around the same pawer comsumption as my i7 since i dont wanna buy a new psu. i have some

Crucial Pro RAM 32GB Kit (2x16GB) DDR4 3200MT/s (or 3000MT/s or 2666MT/s) Desktop Memory CP2K16G4DFRA32A

so id like this ram to be usable with the new processor. once i choose the processor ill look into motherboards.

Any opinions or reccomendations are greatly appreciated.

I'd go the Ryzen 5700X3D + AM4 B550 route over the Intel i7 12700K + B660 DDR4 route.

Yes, you can upgrade the Intel CPU to a 13th/14th gen, but by the time a 5700X3D or the 12700K require an upgrade the Intel 13th/14th will also...

If you upgrade to a 13th or 14th gen Intel cpu DO NOT buy it second hand. It's a huge risk it'll come degraded.

There are also some cases where resellers are scamming buyers; they can try to repack returned degraded cpus to be sold as new on Amazon instead of sending them to Intel.

The 12th gen are unaffected, and the i3 and non-K i5 of the 13th and 14th gen are unaffected aswell.

But Ryzen cpus are great too.

Thanks i think ill go the amd route. im looking at this board for the 5700x MSI B550 Gaming GEN3 Gaming Motherboard (AMD Ryzen 5000 Series, AM4, DDR4, PCIe 3.0, SATA 6Gb/s, M.2, USB 3.2 Gen 1, HDMI/DVI-Port, ATX)

should be good enough right?

The time is now, technically.
