Hello all!

I have a synology 1815+ that I have been running for about 10 years. Two weeks ago it gave me an alert that I needed to replace a drive. Simple. Bought a new drive from ServerPartDeals (Code LTT5 for $5 off). Put the new drive in the nas and began the rebuild and another drive crashed....... It says there are 4 bad sectors, but I don't really understand what that means (but I do have a second fresh replacement drive). I have it set up in 1 fault tolerance SHR (synology hybrid raid). It says to try and back up the server. So what should I do? I have a few ideas:

TL:DR

8 Bay nas

Bay 2 was 'failing'

I replaced it with a new drive

I rebuilt the array

Bay 5 crashed

What do?

Ideas

Put old Bay 2 drive back in, replace Bay 5, rebuild

Post on LTT forum

Cry

Thanks in advance

Can you show the error message in a screenshot?

But I'd follow those directios. Backup the data on the NAS, then delete the volume on the NAS and restore backups.

Typically means the drive is starting to have issues and you should look into replacement.

Added a screenshot of the degradation.

What is the best way to back up 50 TB of a nas? I have a fresh 18tb nas drive (intended to replace Bay 5).

Another NAS is the way to go.

If you have budget constraints, you can certainly download on a few computers and spare drives.

Online services are useless due to connection speed nd most other medias (USB keys, DVD, Blu-ray, floppy) are nothing but a drop in an olympic pool.

I know some specialized services allow you to rent some storage devices but I don't know their pricing nor their availability in your area.

Good luck !

Can you still replace the newly failed disk? What is the status of all the disks in the pool?

Do you have a backup of this system currently? Otherwise get something you can store a backup of all this data on(probably should do this from the start)
