I've recently had a accident with my PC. Long story short I've pulled the AM4 cooler out to change the thermal paste a couple of times and the last time I did it I bent some cpu pins. While trying to fix the pins I killed 4-5 of them and when I plugged it in I smelled something burning and immediately turned it off. Funny thing is that the pc posted after that regardless the cpu not having 4-5 pins but it only posted with 1 ram module and it doesn't post on dual channel configuration. I've ordered some replacement parts but I found out that one of my RAM Modules gets too hot and might be defective but my question is it possible that one of the cpu pins was a memory management pin or something or one of the DIMM sockets might be bad?

yea is very possible one of the pins you broke off was used to connect with memory, you can make sure of that by looking at the am4 socket diagram

when you said you "killed" the pins, do you mean they broke off or did they just bend? in both situations there's a way to fix it (although especially tedious / hard when the pins have broken off)

about the ram stick that was overheating, plug it in by itself, then download and run the occt memory stress test to see if there actually is a problem
(standard ddr4 sodimm's can withstand up to 85c so youre good on that part)

The pins have broken off yes I did some reckless movements while trying to fix them and some of them broke off as for the ram stick I tried it by itself and it isn't posting.

I suppose when you say that you can fix the pins there is some soldering involved sadly I don't have a solder kit nor much experience in soldering. Thanks again tho

Would love to fix it but it might have gotten cooked when I smelled something burning(The ram module).

im pretty sure theres no harm in trying it , its pretty unlikely itll kill something else

How can I try it tho if my pc is not posting? When I have this specific module on

oh alright i thought you hadn't tried it yet my bad. in that case its likely faulty

I am going to try once more afterwards. But I don't think I will be getting anywhere.

the smell + it not posting certainly points to it. if you wanna be 100% sure take it to a local computer shop (failing that even plaisio has an it department) and ask them to test it for you on a different system

Well I ordered a new motherboard and a new CPU because at the beginning I thought it was a cpu problem only but as it turns out it wasn't a cpu problem only it was a ram problem too so gotta wait now and get a new kit at some point.

But tbh 16 gb single channel will be doing me the thing now. I don't do much these days just running docker containers and light gaming so nothing too crazy.

Super temporary but will be fine for the time being.

from what i understood so far, you might get away with not replacing the motherboard too

Well just want to make sure. I don't really know what could occur to be honest this motherboard has gone through a lot. Also I am upgrading to a b550 board which gives me some room for future upgrades(I currently have a b450)

alright, thats fair, you can probably sell it as an untested board
(btw b450 and b550 have the same cpu support, but b450 boards may need a bios update)

(ps. i was looking for a b450 board so i might be able to buy it off of you)
