I'm about to upgrade from my archaic but excellent 4790k to the 12600k due to Microsoft's arbitrary nonsense about TPM and all that jazz.

I was wondering if anyone can give me thoughts on this build. I'm into my 40's, I'm not a "gamer" or a "streamer" but I enjoy my games and would like to aim at least for decent mid-range. Haven't built a new PC for 10 years.

CPU: Intel 12600k

Cooler: Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120

Mobo: Gigabyte Aorus Z790 Elite Ax

RAM: TBC (DDR5) 32gb

GFX: Asus 3070 8gb (a future upgrade will happen eventually for VRAM reasons)

Storage: 1tb NVME for Windows + x2 SSD's

Case: Corsair 4000D Airflow

Basically, I'm most interested in if the motherboard is overkill or underkill or lacks features other people believe to be useful. I haven't added the RAM because I'll use PCPartPicker to sort that as relatively simple.

Have Gigabyte had any "scandals" or issues with anything of late like many of the other brands? Are they still considered at least competent in making mobos?

So yeah, any thoughts on the CPU and mobo combo?

Thanks

It's somewhat overkill.

I recommend 6000Mhz CL-30 DDR5 RAM.

Yes, but I recommend ASRock instead, they're probably the most competent motherboard company at the moment.

Do you insist on buying Intel or are fine with buying AMD because that's the better value choice at the moment?

do you need an upgrade performance wise or is this the sole reason? as the tpm thing can be bypassed with rufus so if you dont need to upgrade performance wise then theres literally no reason to upgrade

just go am5 and ddr5 with a 7600 or if you are in the us microcenter has a 9700x bundle for 430$ w board and ram which will both beat the 12700k in singlecore

mainly asus having issues, that board in particular is one of the better 4dimmers for mem oc but 12th gen imc is pretty weak and wont hit ddr5 8000 like 13th/14th gen or ryzen with 1/2 uclk

To be more clear, I'm sticking with Intel because I hope my Windows will be more likely to reactivate. As for Windows TPM restrictions and all the rest, I'm bypassing now but it's time to upgrade. I like gaming and I kinda deserve an upgrade at this point from a 4790k that has put in a good shift

As for the generation of the CPU, I'm sticking with 12th because they avoided the issues the 13/14 suffered with. I'm not sure I trust they will correctly fix the microcode if they got it wrong in first place so playing safe. One day I'll get a 14900k or something once it's clear the fix worked maybe.
