So,

I'm a trailer composer and movie lover in general that wants to build a home server from my old CPU (intel skylake i3) and i'm looking for some general tips and directions since its the first server i build.

I did watch some LTT videos about this but i wanted more in-depth guidance.

What are my use cases?

  • Storing reference tracks and trailer videos
  • hosting my sample library
  • hosting files (stems for tracks to share with the publisher)
  • something like plex would be nice
  • backing up my projects after they are done.

What would be the best way to tackle this? are there any more guides that go more in-depth into this?

my whole storage situation is probably like 18 TB spread on different hard drives.

So basically:

  • Mass storage
  • Some file acces when editing
  • Hosting plex (no compute on server because well i3)

It can be as simple as you just install windows 11 ltsc on it, set up a file share and done or can be as complex as going with truenas, setting it up like an actual nas and then going further that route.

In the end if this is data you care about do the 321 rule.

3 copies of the data where it's back up on at least 2 different storage devices of which 1 is off site.
