So, I am building a PC. I already bought a 4080 S. I got it at the cheapest price I could find, but it wasn't on sale. Basically it just wasn't inflated price like all the ones I see now.

I just feel personally that prices are not going to come down next year for the 4080 S. Yes, I am aware the 5000 series cards are coming out in January. But Nvidia is also turning off production of 4000 series cards here already.

I don't personally see any major changes in performance coming from the 5000 series cards, I feel they will be way overpriced as people buy them up just to resell them, and any game being made now isn't going to take advantage of the changes if their are any major ones for a while. I also have concerns about the tariffs and trade wars that are already beginning on materials that make these cards.

My main goal with this card is to play at Ultra settings on a 1440p monitor and also use it for VR games as high settings.

Should I stick with my purchase or return my card and wait?

I use a 4080 and I am very happy with the performance still.

Yes the 5080 will beat it but that doesn't make the 4080 a bad card.

The question is, are you happy with it?

What was your previous card? If it works well, wait for 5080. If it's terrible, get 4080 super.

I don't know. I just bought the card and haven't built the PC yet. I guess I would feel stupid if I bought a $1k+ card if a better performing one comes out at $1k+. But I guess I wouldn't feel stupid if the other card is inflated in price. I don't see the 4080 S going down in price though as production has already slowed to a halt on them for the new cards.

My PC is older and any card at this point would be a boost. I wouldn't doubt some integrated GPUs inside some CPUs have better performance now. That is how bad it is. This is a brand new PC build.

I worry you can't wait though in my opinion to purchase the 4080 S. Since production is down, the longer you wait the further lower in stock those cards go until they are like the 4090 and start inflating in price. I am already seeing 4080 S selling for above MSRP, meaning the price has slowly started in inflating as supply drops.

The 5080 will be worse, especially with the new tariffs. Just keep the 4080 super,

You have the 4080 Super in hand now, if you return it you will be charged a restocking fee most likely, can you afford to lose that money. The tariffs will be in place by the time the 50 series launches. Unless Nvidia decides to reduce the price of those chips to their vendors, chips they have already sold them, so it would be rebates, then the 50 series will be higher across the board versus 40 series. At that point you need to look at the price versus performance, and it will most likely not be worth waiting.

We aren't seeing good performance increases because that is what Jensen wants. Jensen may say Moore's Law is dead, but he controls the narrative. If Jensen doesn't want it to happen, it won't. Nvidia is not giving us the performance they could since they are the leader in the space. They give us just enough to be better than everyone else so they can make the most of their R&D. If AMD somehow made a series of cards that outperformed Nvidia you would see Nvidia release a new series months to a year earlier than their ~2 year cycle. My hope is that Intel will push AMD to higher heights and one or the other will get us a good alternative to Nvidia at the high end.
