Hi all, i want to ask if r7 9800x3d would be worth the extra money compares to r7 9700x for playing games like gta 5 and 6 in the future, rdr2 and such at 1440p max settings.

R7 9800x3d is selling at A$830 (Us$540)

R7 9700x is selling at A$530 (Us$340)

Other part i currently have

B650 msi tomahawk

32gb 6400mhz ddr5

7900xt

I mean, the 9800x3d is way better, but extremely overpriced. Instead of a 9700x, I would recommend a 7900x, as its about the same price and performs a bit better. The Australian market may be a bit different though...

With those games? NO. Those games are graphic intensive and single players. Meaning, a consistent 60fps is more than enough. As for "future proofing," it would probably not matter or just very slightly in the next 2-4yrs. if you decide to keep it until 5-8yrs in, with the performance difference, it might mean the difference of being able to run a game smoothly. However, that always the case and true as well with every pc components that's a tier higher or newer. But I'll tell you this, their price difference(at least the one you provided), either with 540 vs 340 or $830 vs $530, are more than 50% markup in price, if you decide to get 9800x3d from a 9700x. While the performance difference is way lower. Which make it not really ideal price to performance wise.

It's not a direct comparison but look at 5800x vs 5800x3d, which are in their 2-4yrs since they were release. You can somehow gage the 9700x and 9800x3d's relevance in the next few years, if you look at their older counterparts' placement in the current pc market and performance bracket.

Personally, I would say outside competitive fps gaming, the only logical reason you should get a 9800x3d instead of 9700x is if you already got the highest gpu your budget can afford. If getting the 9700x, means you would be able to get 1 or even two tiers higher gpu, that's a wiser choice. Imagine adding $200-300 to your gpu budget. That's the price difference between a 4070 super/4070 ti/4070 ti super to a 4080 super and/or 7800xt/7900gre/7900xt to a 7900xtx. With that, more often than not, which pair do you think would be better at gaming, 9800x3d + 4070ti/tis/7900gre/7900xt vs 9700x + 4080s/7900xtx?

Thank you for making it very clear for me. I have already bought b650 main and ddr5 ram and 7900xt (due to great black Friday deal) in order to pass my current set up (r5 5600x + 6700xt) down to my brother whom got my first rig (r5 1700x and rx580). The Au$300 ish i saved can be allocated to do sth else.

Thank you again for the break down

A Au$300 mark up isn't worth the mere 10-12ish fps difference. The results are most likely from paring with a 4090. Im using the cpu with 7900xt (a gpu that is 1.5 tier lower than 4090) so the difference will be smaller

That sounds good, and I agree that the 9800x3d is not worth it. I still stand by the 7900x. It's just more price to performance. and the 9700x is not a huge jump from the 7700x, which is disappointing.

Actually it is. If you go by the stock settings, then yes, it's basically slightly better performance at almost half the power consumption. But if you optimized and increase power, it actually caught up with 7800x3d gaming performance and right at it's tail. Here's one of the video I was able to watch before getting it. Also even the more known reviewers, mentioned this as well, hat when overclocked the 9700x gives higher performance than the 7700x. Most of them just tested the 7700x with 105w tdp vs 9700x at 65w tdp, because that's what amd provided.
