Budget (including currency): $500-$700 CAD

Country: Canada

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Gaming, The Finals, CS2, The Witcher, etc.

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc):

Looking for help in upgrading my current PC, I am currently running an i5-6600K, Z170X Gaming 7, and a 2060. I would like to upgrade my cpu and have to upgrade my motherboard and ram as well, I'd like to keep the gpu for now and upgrade that later if possible.

Thanks in advance!

Hey! Welcome to the Forum 🙂

How about something like this?

The 7600 is a great budget CPU with plenty of power. It also comes with a stock cooler that is more than good enough to cool it.

No Problem.

The MSI motherboard is also good enough for a CPU upgrade later if you want to put in a 9800X3D for example.

I could have made a list with a 5700X3D but I think the AM5 platform offers more of an upgrade path later.

We basically know at this point that Zen 6  ( Ryzen 10000 or whatever they call it ) will be on AM5 too.

I dont mean to overwhelm you with information.  I just think that its nice to know 🙂

Here is a 10 game average at 1080p and 1440p with an RTX 4090 ( stesses CPU more ) By Hardware Unboxed.

You can see that the 7600 keeps up very nicely even with CPU's ( 13900k ) at over twice the price!

Its an incredible CPU and it comes with a stock cooler 😮

I will leave a link to the video at the end.

I appreciate all the information it's helpful to look at. Do you think it's worth putting more money into a motherboard or they all pretty much will do the same thing in the price range I'm looking at?

Gotcha!  I agree 🙂

There are definitely better motherboards out with more features but nothing that would improve performance over the MSI motherboard I picked out for you with a 7600, or even a 7800X3D for that matter.

I have built over a 100 AM5 systems so far.

My favorite motherboards are the ''ASUS TUF B650 PLUS WIFI''  ''MSI B650 TOMAHAWK PLUS WIFI'' And the Gigabyte B650 AORUS ELITE AX / V2''

Personally owning the ASUS TUF B650 PLUS WIFI.

If you want to be on the absolute safe side for 'future proofing' to put a newer, faster CPU later.

Get one of these 3 in my opinion.

Or maybe you find something else in the Roundup you like 🙂

B650 motherboards are Ryzen 7000 - 9000 ready.  For Ryzen 9000 you just need to update the BIOS.

Here is a 35 B650 roundup by Hardware Unboxed. They also have a video on this on Youtube.

He also talks about the 3 motherboards that I favor 🙂

its a long read.
