Hello everyone, I came here to ask everybody a quick question. I'm currently running an R9 5900x, MSI 3080 SuprimX & 32GB (4x8) DDDR4 3600mhz, and I was wondering how would I go about upgrading in the future without lashing out loads of money. Like I'm not upgrading any time soon I can run 95% of games at 1440p High~Ultra. But how would I go about actually upgrading? Would I switch to a mid-high-end AM5 CPU or a low-end AM5 with more money for RAM? The same goes for the GPU I'm not sure if I should get a mid-higher-end 40 series when it gets cheaper or a lower-end 50 series in 2025. Any insight would be appreciated :')

Your system is quite solid now, the upgrade I would look forward to would be the GPU, but even that is pretty far from where we are today. That 10GBs of VRAM was (at launch) and will be the nail in the coffin which actually matter for the 3080s.

I would say wait, until there are compelling options.

I think it'll be quite a while before you upgrade. Anyways, i'd start with the gpu and then a platform upgrade. The 3080 will likely be good for a while tho, especially with upscaling. But when the time comes, you should look at a similar card in that performance class. So the mid to higher end. Also make sure it's a significant upgrade. 1.5x is worth it but 1.15x or 1.2x just aren't. As for moving to AM5, it's the same thing. Just wait till your current system struggles to meet your needs and then target something that will bring in a significant uplift in performance.

Odds are whatever you'll be upgrading to next will probably be in the mid-high end. Only go for the lower end stuff if it's ridiculously faster than what you've got.

Thanks for the insight, Cleared a few thoughts out of the way 🙂

Agreed, you already have nearly the best AM4 has to offer. No need to upgrade to AM5 likely even until the next generation of GPU's or your desire or needs for >144hz.

For pure gaming applications a 5700x3d may be a better option if you need high frame rates, but if your goal is 1440p <144hz with quality settings, even that won't make much of a difference.
