The PSU is supposed to be a 500W 80 Plus according to the spec sheet.
Im using a Cooler Master Hyper 212.

I'd replace the PSU and get a new cooler as well.  Then you'd have a very solid machine for even 1440p, let alone 1080p.

This is where I would baseline, with room if you want to go a bit higher on anything.  Even a 7900GRE or 4070 Super would fit and work well.  Hell, get a new monitor.

Sell the old parts and recoup.

PCPartPicker Part List

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 5700X3D 3 GHz 8-Core Processor  ($348.77 @ JW Computers)
CPU Cooler: Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE 66.17 CFM CPU Cooler  ($55.00 @ Scorptec)
Video Card: Asus DUAL OC Radeon RX 7800 XT 16 GB Video Card  ($708.77 @ JW Computers)
Power Supply: MSI MAG A750GL PCIE5 750 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply  ($111.10 @ BPC Technology)
Total: $1223.64
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available
Generated by PCPartPicker 2024-11-12 15:02 AEDT+1100

Budget (including currency): $1000-$1500 AUD

Country: Australia

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: Factorio Space Age, Genshin Impact, Honkai Star Rail, HZD, HFW,  Tomb Raiders etc (some blender/3d modelling but minimal)

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc):
I have an AMD Ryzen 5 3600X and RTX 2060 S, with 32GB of ram. I can't tell you what mobo it actually is, becuase it was from a prebuild but it looks similar to a reskinned Asus b450m-k.
It has 3 drives in it - 1x 1TB ssd for backups , 1x 512gb ssd for documents, 1x 2TB ssd for games. The mobo does not have an nvme slot. The graphics card has only one very small fan so even with large amounts of airflow through the case, it thermal throttles no matter what.  Im not sure if thats the exact same graphics card, but that is what the outside case looks like.

ASUS TURBO-RTX2060S-8G-EVO Turbo GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER EVO Graphic Card - 8 GB GDDR6 - Dual Slot | Exxact

Looking to upgrade mainly to get better graphics performance and less stuttering and buffering when playing big bases in factorio and sometimes when doing Horizon or Tomb Raider.

What PSU and CPU Cooler are you using?

First blush is get a 5700X3D for $350 and a 7800XT for $700 if you have a decent PSU, which should be since a 7800XT isn't a huge load.

Reusing your existing PSU, B450 equiv. and RAM is the smart play here.

What’s the difference between the 7800xt and the 4070s in this situation? Is there a reason to go one over the other? I’m probably still going with the 5700x3d but for graphics which would be better?

4070s is faster than the 7800xt since its more like a 3080ti where the 7800xt is basically a 6800xt so similar to a regular 3080/4070

https://au.pcpartpicker.com/list/JNGxrM

5700x3d + 6950xt

id ditch both of those gpus for a used 6950xt however as it closes in on the 4070 ti super (faster than the 7900 gre) whilst being similarly priced or outright cheaper than the 7800xt

you can also save 122$ on the 5700x3d by buying it off aliexpress so you might aswell save the extra cash

Im using a Cooler Master Hyper 212.

yeah that definitely needs replacing, ive gone with the gf a3 850w as it has a 10 year warranty but there is a cooler master 750 g psu for 88$ or something like that if you wanna save abit of cash

cooler wise i do reccomend an upgrade but if the h212 does fine enough for cooling the 5700x3d this is more of an optional thing rather than a neccesity

btw what specific prebuilt?

and whats the case? you can send a photo if you dont know mainly of the front of the case as you might wanna consider replacing it if its one of those crappy solid front no airflow cases

Agree it would be easier to start from scratch and sell if you can afford it.

Any of the upgrade paths require other components and AM4 is a dead end

Sure we could make suggestions to patch up the jalopy but we are prolonging the inevitable, and the only justification for that would be short term financial.

If by selling the PC you can push closer to $2000AUD, you are in position to get a decent system.

If you are competent to build now may be a good time to start. 9000 series stuff is coming out, and 7000 series stuff is getting cheap. You might be able to snag something complete local and that even gives you an upgrade path in the future. And that makes the most financial sense if the budget can handle the stretch

It was an Asus Rog Strix Ryzen 5 3600X and GeForce RTX 2060S. https://www.scorptec.com.au/product/branded-systems/gaming-systems/83566-g15dh-au024tThe original

The case has been replaced already due to an extreme lack of airflow and fan spaces. Its now in an Antec AX61 Elite ARGB Tempered Glass Mid-Tower ATX Case - Black.

For Blender / 3d modeling you want a Nvidia card.
