Hey, I'm looking to upgrade my PC as I've started to notice lag on games (the ones I've listed). I think there is a CPU bottleneck because I'm pretty sure my GPU is powerful enough so I have an idea of what parts to get but I just want to make sure they're worth it and will make a difference etc. My budget would probably be at £450 max

Games: BeamNG drive, Forza Horizon 5, Minecraft with RTX, Train Sim World 5

Current Parts:

ASUS Q170M-C

i7 6700

32GB Corsair Vengeance 3600MHZ (Running at 2133MHZ with XMP enabled)

Palit RTX 3060 Dual

Gamemax 700w rampage psu

2TB Crucial MX500

Possible new parts:

Gigabyte Z370 HD3 (eBay)

i7 9700k / i5 9600k (Second hand store)

Same RAM

Same GPU

Corsair CX750 psu (not some random brand one)

WD Black SN770 2TB or 250GB (Might use NVME for windows and SATA ssd for games and stuff)

I feel like these specs would be the best option because 9th gen intel is still fairly new, the ram will run at a higher speed, the pc will meet the win 11 requirements and the bottleneck should be a lot less.

I'm fully open to suggestions if there is a better deal I could get or anything. I can go to AMD if possible too, I just don't have that much experience with it.

Thanks

Without prices it is hard to say for sure, but the 9th gen parts are normally very hard to justify against a new 12100F, 12400F (or 5600) or 12600KF, due to their high used prices.

The 9700k ain't that much faster than the 6700 unfortunately, they are on the same +14nm node and the upgrade is meh at best.

I fully stand behind getting a new power supply though, that Gamemax 700 is a fire hazard.

I would stick with the 2TB MX500 for now and spend the money on a better CPU upgrade.

Ryzen 5600 (Ryzen 3600 is about the same as an i7 8700K, better than the i5 9600k) and a B550 motherboard. Keep the RAM.

If you can afford, a Ryzen 5700X3D.

So after looking through I think I'm going to use the 5700X3D which was suggested and also the rest of the parts that Hinjima recommended.

Parts

MSI MAG A650BN - £44.99 > $60.34

MSI MAG B550 Tomahawk Max Wifi - £149.99 > $201.15

5700X3D - £175.97 > $235.97

MSI MAG Forge M100R Mini-Tower Case - £49 > $65.71

Arctic Freezer 36 Black - £19.24 > $25.80

This all adds up to £439.19 or $588.95 from Amazon.

Sounds good!  You wrote £ in your budget so I went with PcPartPicker with UK prices.

That will be a very good system indeed 🙂

And the 5700X3D has the power to not be a bottleneck if you want a faster GPU later down the line, like a 7800 XT for example.

One thing to keep in mind is that the 7600 offers similar(ish) performance and would get you on a newer (more upgradeable) platform, though you would also need new DDR5 memory with this option.

Bundles with a 7500F exist too, though the boards and RAM tend to be (the board) low quality and not enough of it (the RAM).
