Any input is really appreciated. Im in the middle of a very long upgrade process. The last big piece to upgrade is the GPU. Budget of around $400 if I bought something now, about $500 is a waited a month. Can't really go much higher with holidays coming up after that.

New setup with be a 7950x3d with 32GB of RAM.

1440p 120hz main monitor and an older 1440p 60hz secondary monitor.

I was learning toward the 7800xt or maybe the 7900 GRE if I waited or it hit a sale.Thoughts?

If you want a GPU now your best off going with a 7800 XT, if your waiting for 7900 GRE prices to go down then you might as well wait for the 50 series GPUs to come out so other GPUs go down in price.

Well this oughta help you decide. This is average performance taken from 10 Games at 1440p Ultra. With settings turned down to high, you should see a significant 30% or so boost in FPS (Ultra is extremely demanding but doesn't offer huge fidelity improvements over High so its kinda a wasteful setting).

Can I just say I love all this information in a single graph. Toms Hardware is just the best!

Oh hey - Bonus - Just saw a 7900 GRE on Sale over at newegg for $530, Open Box is also available for $500 flat. So if you could spring the cash now you could actually end up with a 7900 GRE instead. Thats a sweet little upgrade over the 7800-XT for basically no difference in cost.

Depends, the 7800XT has issues crashing PCs. I just gave up after the 3rd card and got a 4070

This is not the case. Nobody else has been reporting that as an issue. I would bet just guessing that your PSU is going bad or was never powerful enough and the problem is solved because you went to a lower wattage GPU.

Of course OP, the immediate question is what do you do with this PC? If it's a gaming PC, is it too late to return the 7950x3d and get an affordable CPU like a 7800x3d to maximize your GPU budget?

If not, then you're around $500 and that's going to be a 4070, 7800xt, or 7900gre. Basically, you spend more you get more performance. It's not an easy answer with a correct choice.

It wasn’t the PSU I actually upgraded to a 1000W unit to make sure it wasn’t that and tested with my home theatre PC with the new PSU to check it wasn’t platform related. It also crashed at the desktop idling. It’s an actual issue with the cards.

Again, your niche experience of problems doesn't reflect the vast majority of users...

The 7800xt is a fairly popular card and very few problems are reported. I would not avoid one off some minor problems niche users have.

Why the 7950x3d?  Specific use case it just thought it was the best CPU?

As at time of writing, you can get a 7900GRE for the same price of a 4070 non-Super

I was planning on the 7800x3d honestly but then the 7950x3d had a sale on amazon for $430 and getting twice the cores for just $10 seemed like a no brainer
