Hello,

I am looking for a new storage device for my PC. My current setup is a 256 GB SSD for my OS and a 1 TB for Storage (Games, Documents, Videos etc. ) .

I am looking for a 2TB SSD for my M.2 slot.

This will be my first M.2 device and I don't have any experience with this material. Your advice will be appreciated.

My motherboard is a ASUS Z170 Pro Gaming.

Thanks for help.

Cheers

When asking for such thing it's best to atleast give your budget and which country you're buying from.

May as well state what you plan to do with it as well.

Do you plan to move your OS to the new M.2 as well ? or keep it simply for general data storage ? etc

If it's just for general data storage, even a budget option will do TBH

Here's a list of compatible M.2's as a starting point:

https://pcpartpicker.com/products/internal-hard-drive/#c1=di_m2.pcie_30_x4&f=122080&sort=price&page=1&A=2000000000000

You could technically also go with a PCIe 4.0 or even a PCIe 5.0 NVMe, but since the board only supports PCIe 3.0, that would be a waste of money. Pick one that fits within your budget, then try to find some reputable reviews.

Budget doesn't matter. Only condition that it is of good quality. Like Durability, reliability and performance. I don't want it dying on me, you know ?

The OS will stay on the 256GB and the M.2 will serve for software development, media , documents and maybe bit of games.

I flew over some M.2s and some come with heat sinks whereas others do not. Do they get hot and by how much ?

That is correct, however if I swap more components to newer models, I would be capped by the speed of the older model as I would be capped by the motherboard if I pick a newer component.

good PCIe 3.0 2TB SSD, cost more than good PCIe 4.0 2TB SSD

Can you clarify, what type of storage device you have?

That 256 GB SSD, and 1 TB for Storage (what is it 3,5" HDD, 2,5" SSD SATA), or M.2 NVME SSD

Your mobo has only one M.2 Slot PCIE 3.0 x4 (but also has 2 x PCIe 3.0 x4 slots)

The included heatsink is generally good enough, provided your case has enough airflow. Most modern motherboards come with covers that double as heatsinks, which also work fine. They can get warm under sustained load, but in general use it's not much of a concern.

Mine hover somewhere between 40-50°C right now, using the heatsinks included with the motherboard, with a room temp around 30°C.

When it comes to durability, as I said, I'd have a look at some benchmarks. Maybe also have a look at the warranty offered by the manufacturer.

Yes 256GB SATA 2.5 inch and 3,5 inch TB HDD.

My motherboard doesn't come with a heat sink, therefore I probably would have to buy an M.2 with heat sink.

Anyway, is it better to purchase a newer or older model?

There is no real answer to this outside of: read/watch reviews.

Newer model could refer to one of multiple things: newer PCIe standard, higher NVMe spec version, released at a later date/higher revision

As I said above, your system only supports PCIe 3.0, so unless you can get a PCIe 4.0 (or 5.0) NVMe at a better price, it makes no sense to get one. You won't get any speed benefit from it. In fact, given your system's age, I wouldn't be surprised if it struggles to sustain 3.5 GB/s possible on PCIe 3.0 in some cases.

As someone who owns SATA SSDs, and both a PCIe 3.0 and PCIe 4.0 NVMe, I can also tell you their higher speed makes virtually zero difference most use cases. Unless you copy a ton of large files around, you often don't even notice the difference in speed compared to SATA SSDs.

Given your motherboard's age, I would assume it supports NVMe spec version 1.2.x (maybe even 1.3 with later BIOS revisions), which means you don't benefit from improvements introduced with later revisions of the spec. So that's also not a factor to worry about too much.

When it comes to release dates, it really depends. In general newer models should offer better longevity, at the same time you now have cheaper drives that can actually perform worse than older models. Likewise, newer revisions can sometimes skimp on controllers, to make them cheaper to produce. So, tl;dr: reviews. reviews. reviews.

Yes, it’s in the pci-sig spec.

but do update uefi if you have problems, sometimes exactly this is what’s not working. had problems to run pcie 2.0 gpu in PCIe 4.0 slot ( updated uefi, worked no problem since then )

some boards let you force m.2 gen ( but it should be on auto by default )
