So I've been wanting to get into programming and I found The Odin Project. It seems to me like a pretty robust program but does anybody have any feedback? Should I learn somewhere else?

The reviews are rather good. Like if you go the full web dev path they have it will be a good start, although to get a job you will still need time - to improve your skills, to work on soft skills like code quality, and then apply to many job listings (as the junior market is quite rough).

React/JS is very popular, then I would say Python and then PHP. Ruby probably not so much anymore.

It looks like it’s pretty focused on web development, specifically with React and Node.JS. Is that the direction you want to head?

No idea honestly, was kinda hoping on some guidance. Haven't heard of React before. I was hoping to learn about creating my own website/app.

If you are looking to get into web development, there are few better options. Like anything, you will get out the effort you put in. Be ready to put in the work, but assuming you do, it's a fantastic program.

Have any links to those better options? Can never have too many resources!

I'd probably go with CS50. It's Harvard's intro to computer science. It's free via edx.

https://www.edx.org/learn/computer-science/harvard-university-cs50-s-introduction-to-computer-science

It should give you a decent foundation, with exposure to several languages and directions you could go, which might have give you some ideas of what you might want to do next.... or teach you that you don't want to do program, which is also a valuable lesson.

React is a frontend Javascript framework, developed by Facebook, for making websites. Personally, I think a lot of people jump into this too early and it becomes a crutch to learning and understand the basics, while overcomplicating everything at the same time. There are a million frameworks out there, this is just one that happens to be popular at the moment.

The overcomplication part I totally understand. I'm just barely scratching the surface of programming and all I've learned is I have learned nothing 😂 will def check out the edx course, been a fan of that site for a while.

I think you are misundering. I'm saying there not many other (free) options with the breath and detail that TOP provides. It's one of the best.

It also gives you good understanding of git processes, which is a massive bonus, even if you don't stay in the Web Dev lane.

ask me about my homelab
