Unraid Disk Config Advise

Go to solution Solved by Jarsky,

If you're using the standard Unraid Storage Pool; then you can easily add more data disks.

Parity disks aren't mirror disks; they just need to be of equal size or larger to the largest data disk.

You can happily run just 1 disk parity up to about 5-7 disks. If you're pushing 8+ then its strongly recommend 2 disk parity.

Just install the new 8TB, perform a pre-clear, stop the array, assign the disk, start the array, format the new disk.

Hi Everyone,

After building many computers I've finally build a server for myself a couple of months ago.
Unraid felt right for me with everything going on in my IT life and thusfar it has been incredibly succesfull.

However: Disk configs, RAID and Parity is subject I am not very experienced with and everything I find online has made my head

hurt at this point.
That's why I figgured there is definitly someone in this community that can point me in the right direction.

I've started out with 2 8TB HDD's that currently work in parity.

As of now they're filling up in a rapid pace and I am already thinking of expanding.

What would be the logical thing to do here? Adding a 3rd 8TB will get me in trouble parity wise, right?

I've also read alot about dual parity but while I'd like to have my data secure I also don't want to throw to much money on a same location backup if you know what I mean.

Although, if I understand correctly, adding an 8TB second parity drive could make it possible to also add another data drive within parity boundries, right?

Very curious about your ideas!

Alright! That's quite convenient for my situation then.

I think my brain needs to fold around the idea that parity isn't really a backup.

Thanks for comfirming this!
