Hello, I was looking to setup a proxmox server for the first time and I'm not sure if or how my goal is feasible. I recently got a threadripper 1950x for dirt cheap and was wanting to set up 2 VMs having the own dedicated GPU, it'll be for my kids and I was wanting to know what else id need to be able to pull this off. Id like to give them a log in and depending  who logs it determines the vm they get it, basically if like them to have their own dedicated log in. Also what else would I need to bring the USB and video from the closet the server would be in?

That isn’t really how this world… if you did want to do this (I advise against it… virtual machines for gaming just isn’t a great idea, if for no other reason then anticheat software freaks out), each VM is its own system, unaware of the other, and unaware of the Proxmox host.

You would need a monitor plugged into each GPU (one for each VM), as well as keyboard and mouse. And those peripherals would only be able to interface with the VM they are plugged into.

Gotcha, ya I knew they were seperate, that's all fine I can just dedicate them there own. Follow up question if I do, is there a hub system that would allow me to run HDMI and about 20 feet? Basically id have a monitor keyboard and mouse plugged into the hub and the hub connects back to the pc

Before you spend money on making this work, I’d test it out with a single GPU and a single VM just to prove out your plan. Again… virtual gaming, for the most part, is just a bad idea. It makes almost everything more difficult.

But if you prove it out and you are ok with the headaches and drawbacks, I’d look at caldigit. Their hubs are the gold standard. Not cheap…. But they actually work as advertised. I’d probably go thunderbolt, which would require you get thunderbolt PCIe cards to pass through to each VM. For hdmi, that may be trickier. I would run a GPU that supports display port and then figure out your beet options for long DP cables, or maybe active cables. I am less sure about this, but there is information available out there. But, these are all reasons why not just building two low cost machines is almost always a better option.
