Hey all! I have a server I need storage for. I currently have two 128g "cheapest I could find, stolen out of a laptop" SSDs that I expect to die very soon. I need some more storage, and hopefully some that is reliable too.

I have 2 SATA and 2 SAS/SATA slots with only 2 being usable at a time due to missing drive sleds. (Thanks fujitsu!)
I am looking at a Kioxia EXCERIA SATA SSD (or two for raid), but want more opinions / options before deciding.

Thanks in advance!

I think you're looking in the right direction.  You can't beat the value of ex-server drives for cost per capacity.

ASUS B650E-F GAMING WIFI + R7 7800X3D + 2x Corsair Vengeance 32GB DDR5-6000 CL30-36-36-76  + ASUS RTX 4090 TUF Gaming OC

Router:  Intel N100 (pfSense) Backup: GL.iNet GL-X3000/ Spitz AX Switches: Netgear MS510TXUP, MS510TXPP, GS110EMX
WiFi6: Zyxel NWA210AX (1.7Gbit peak at 160Mhz) WiFi5: Ubiquiti NanoHD OpenWRT (~500Mbit at 80Mhz)
ISPs: Zen Full Fibre 900 (~930Mbit down, 115Mbit up) + Three 5G (~1200Mbit down, 115Mbit up, variable)

i've had very good luck with kingston A400's (except for one batch from a retailer i really dont like buying from, because their prices are too low to make sene), and i've had bad luck with crucial...

but that's all that i can say about those two options: luck.

I have kind of been there.

I have 3 sata ssds in raidz1 presently in a desltop machine as a server.  A mixture of old & used. Also I bought the cheapest sata ssd to go with them for redundancy.

It works in that is stores virtual machines/containers.  No failures as yet but.............

I just got another machine.   an optiplex micro 3060. Upgraded to  32GB memory and 1TB MX500 for OS. Also experimenting with a 16GB optane as cache (zfs l2arc).

It is  a less powerful machine, but more responsive.

Connecting to Vm through remote is faster,  jellyfin much more responsive.

Whether it is using raidz1, using old drives, or the optane on the new machine has benefits is hard to tell.

With using old drives, definitely have some sort of redundancy.

Also expect very low results for random 4k read tests on old/used drives.

Main Machine: CPU: 5800X3D  RAM: 64GB  GPU: RTX 3080  M/B: ASUS B550-E Storage: 2 x 256GB NVME boot, 4 TB NVME OS: Windows 10, Ubuntu 22.04

Server1:  Dell optiplex 3060  micro  CPU: i5-8500T  RAM: 32GB OS: Proxmox  Virtual Machines: Opnsense,  Ubuntu, Windows LXC containers: netboot server, jellyfin, lancache

Server2: CPU: i7-3770  RAM: 32GB M/B Z77 extreme6   OS:  Truenas scale (16TB logical storage)

To begin with, you may search for used SSDs that got retired from servers, and still have health readings of 90%+, including:

  • Samsung PM863a, PM883a, PM963a, PM9a3 (U.2), PM1725b (U.2/PCIe), PM983a (M.2-22110), etc.
  • PBlaze V 516 AIC (PCIe).
  • Micron 5300 Pro (SATA), 7300 Pro (U.2), etc.

Some are discouraged due to probability in SMART modification:

  • Intel S3510/S3520, S4510/S4610, etc.
  • Micron 500, 600, 1100, etc.

As for boot drives, Optane 16GB would also be a good candidate: high endurance, decent random performance and negligible costs.
