help with new gpu installed

so my pc specs are i5 7400 rtx 3050 16 ram today i upgraded from the 1050 ti to the rtx 3050 and im not seeing big improvment as i see on google also when im benchmarking its says that the gpu is working much below expectation any idea whats going on ? i also have 400 psu so maybe thats what causes it would appreciate the help :)

What is your CPU usage?  That CPU is quite old and underpowered for today, so it may be holding back the 3050.

3050 is around double performance to  1050Ti, but your CPU may be a bottleneck, play some games and get CPU and GPU usage to confirm

so if my cpu is on 100% and gpu stays mid it means i need to upgrade the cpu?

Double yes, but for your case.

 

The i5 7400 was ok back in 2017 and was just holding on in 2020. Now it's just not enough for a lot of modern games.

You have three choices:

• Whole platform CPU, Motherboard and RAM upgrade.
• Find an i7 6700 or i7 7700 for cheap, if possible.
• Find a used replacement PC that may only need a few parts, like a drive and gpu.

Unfortunately your socket LGA 1151 peaks with the 7000 series, so budget isn't really an option.

Unless off course you consider 100ish $/EU budget enough.

Not sure how long a 6700/7700 would last you until you are right back here with the same problem.

I'd look at a Ryzen 5600 or Intel 12400f platform.

 

Since you have DDR4 already I think (do you have 16GB DDR4?), you can just get a CPU and motherboard.

The 7700K is a bandaid.  It's better than what you have but it still isn't strong in 2024.  If you got one, you'd be slightly better off but still nowhere you want to be yet.,

i was never involved with mother boards how do i search for one how do i know whats good?

A 7700 (newegg pricing) is gonna cost ya 100-120ish (US).

It's still a 4 core CPU though and that is ...well...not advisable.

Best bet would be what Linus does in his Junk Yard Wars videos....screw someone over

on a second hand deal.....:)

Yeah, even the 4 core 8 thread chips are showing their age, which is why I dislike the modern ish i3.

I think most likely the op has slow RAM like 2133 or 2400Mhz speed. Maybe, don't know if the op knows.

yes i do have 2133 would it be a problem if i change motherboard?

No, it would just a limitation vs 3200 or 3600MHz RAM.  Not the end of the world if ultra cash strapped.

 

For motherboards, you can look at reviews, google what motherboards for which CPU you go with, or ask here.

 

I would recommend this at the minimum...  provided you have an ATX case.  You won't need a PSU upgrade, but look for that in the short term as a 400w PSU is probably old.

 

Also, are you able to do the parts swap?  It's not hard but can be daunting for a first timer.

Faster RAM benefits the newer CPU's performance, but if you have a very weak GPU and a very powerful CPU, I don't think it will be that much of a noticeable difference in gaming.(Note that I said gaming, but not all games are the same.) The other thing is a 12th gen i5 will blow the doors off your cpu even with the sam RAM speed. I suggested faster RAM because I was thinking about the future for upgrading.

 

This upgrade is possible within a 200-250 USD budget.(Even cheaper of you buy used combos)
