I'll be doing gaming and also programming/databasing (Computer Science major).

The things I'm uncertain about are:-

  • The case. I wanted a phantom 530 instead but it's too large for my desk and would look silly. I'd like a midtower that can support watercooling (a 240mm rad atleast) so that I have an option to change if aircooling bothers me.
  • Wasn't sure if I should get a 750W or 850w psu. I have a 10 year warranty on this evga power supply and its a tier 1 psu. I can use it for future builds where sli'ing is a possibility.
  • Air cooler - I'm not knowledgable on watercooling really, and aircooling seems fine for me. I won't be doing crazy overclocks. Picked this cpu because of the aesthetics (stupid I know), but it also has great reviews and cools almost as well as a Noctu NH-D14 (without the ugly looks)
  • Some might think a 4gb graphics card is pointless, and so did I until I thought about a year or so down the line. I will definitely run a dual display 1080p, and if prices get more student friendly, may upgrade to 1440p, so I reckon 4gb is feasible. I'll only ever game on one monitor.
  • The mobo - wasn't sure whether to pick this mobo or the Msi gaming 5 z97.
I'm running a red and black theme (if anybody didn't notice) and I do think I'd like a windowed case that isn't plain boring.

What do you guys think?

Damn forgot about that. £1000. Not including monitor etc though, and would be happy if it was less than that. I don't mind going a little £30-40 over if it's feasible.

Thanks for any help in advance Dude. Gonna get to bed now leave me any suggestions for the morning

Thanks for the reply. I'm not sure if if I'm keen on that case as I'd like one that supports ODD's. not a big fan of the cpu cooler as it looks ghastly :(. Has great results although. Also I'm going going to need a 2tb hard drive I believe, not too fussed about the ssd. Would also prefer to stick to nvidia cards. Not sure what it is about amd, I just don't favour them.

Thank you. I'm not really keen on mini atx boards as the flexibility for upgrading isn't really there. I've always wanted a normal sized atx. I think the 780 is overkill for me also.

Man sorry to be fussy but it's the same case as the first guy. Would need at least 1 odd slot for a fan controller.

I'd also highly prefer a red and black build to go with the gaming equipment I already have (I hate to be fussy and should have stated first)

It's also quite a bit over my budget (could downgrade the 780 to fix that however)

Also I really don't know much about watercooling and would probably like to stick to air cooling.

Not sure about in Britland but in the States a 290 is the price of a 770 4gb wich is a HUGE perfromance increase.

Even if you prefer Nvidia you just be a blatent fanboy for denying that.

I don't disagree with that in the states. However in UK there's a big difference in prices. I was looking at the 280x instead 770 however. What are your thoughts?
