They should work fine.

 

I can only think of two exceptions:

- Reusing a premade enclosure might not work, if its controller is set to look for a Seagate/WD/Toshiba mechanical drive.

- Very, very old adapters may have SATA I controllers that may not play nicely with SSDs or drives over 1 TB.

Is there not a the difference in height between HDD and SSD that could matter?

Electrically, that makes no difference.

 

Mechanically, just tape the SSD down or fil the space with foam tape or anti-static foam. You just have to keep the drive from flapping around in the case so it doesn't break the SATA connectors.

Yes, but you want one with 10Gbps usb interface ( to have full sata III speed ), and the one that support UASP, and TRIM passthrough. If you want to buy a new one.

Most enclosures I can find only support 5 Gb/s, what I should look for? Do I need one that support both UASP and UNMAP?

How fast are your USB 3.0 ports that you will use it in? 
with 5Gbps enclosures you give up around 100MBps in max speed of sata III ( as it’s 6Gbps )
 

 UASP and trim are important for speed / latency.

and you always want to trim your ssd, from time to time, so it have it’s max speed available, when writing to it lots of data. 
if you can, get one that support it. 

If your use case is not that demanding, get what you can ( it’s nice to have uasp and trim on 10Gbps link, but it will still work without it )
ps. Try to get usb C one, as micro usb b 3.0 is just bad connector…  and break easy.

I don't have a usb-c port, would an adapter to usb-a work?

What would the maximum speed of a SATA SSD be in 5Gbps and 10Gbps enclosures?

In 5GBps it’s around 450-480MBps in 10GBps it’s 560MBps ( max sata III speed, as it’s not limited by usb speed )

 

if you don’t have 10Gbps usb ports in your PC,  then it doesn’t matter. 

 

but it depends on configuration, in old PC I had usb 3.0, but the controller was only connected by pcie 2.0 x1 to chipset… so I would get like 360-380MBps out of it.

if you don’t have 10Gbps usb ports in your PC,  then it doesn’t matter. 

 

but it depends on configuration, in old PC I had usb 3.0, but the controller was only connected by pcie 2.0 x1 to chipset… so I would get like 360-380MBps out of it. 

With little and mostly bad experience with enclosures, is any of the options below worth considering? Anyone heard of these brands before?
