Motherboard doesn't detect GPU

Go to solution Solved by Chris_nz,

Tried a different PCI-E lane? ( idk if someone posted this )

I am trying to upgrade my GPU from an ASUS 550 ti to a Sapphire R9 280x toxic. The 280x works, I have already tested it in a different system. I have tried it in two different PCIe slots and the motherboard still doesn't detect it. I have the latest BIOS version. I tried reformatting the drive and it still doesn't work.

Motherboard: ASRock z77 fatal1ty professional-m

CPU: i5-2500k

Power supply: Rosewill 1000w

OS: windows 8.1 64 bit

BIOS version: 2.0

Great motherboard :PxD

Assuming your 550ti worked on that mobo(it worked, right?) there is only one thing I can imagine.Your power supply does not feed the gpu properly.

If you have another psu try it.

yes, the 550 ti works with the motherboard. When I tested the 280x in the other system, I used the same psu so it works with the 280x.

what do you mean with "it doesn't detect it" does it appear in device manager?

if you connect the display cable to the gpu are you getting signal?

Woah,really?

This is very, very weird. So,the pci-e of the mobo is fine because the 550ti worked. The GPU is fine as well because you tested it in another system. Same as the power supply.

I really can't think of anything else.

In the BIOS, it shows what is connected to the motherboard. When i had my 550 ti in it showed that there was something connected to the PCIe slot. When i have my 280x it doesn't show anything is connected to the PCIe slot. Also it will boot using the IGPU even if I have selected to boot from the PCIe slot if I have the 280x in.

huh? im not computer savvy but, if its booting from the IGPU does that mean you have the cable plugged into the MOBO not the GPU? or does the IGPU signal pass though the GFX card and produce a signal?? lol

I only get a signal to the monitor if I plug the cable into the motherboard. If I plug it into the GPU, nothing will show up on the monitor because it will boot with the IGPU and not the dedicated GPU.

did you try plugging the cable in gpu, clearing cmos and then turning on?

I cleared cmos and still not working. When I boot the pc with the cable plugged in the gpu nothing shows up on the monitor. If I take it out and plug it into the motherboard, it shows up on the monitor.

I have it plugged into the top DVI port on the GPU. The cable I am using is a single link DVI-D.

For a GPU you should be using the bottom DVI port strangely enough. Try that, it should specify in the user manual of your GPU.

I had the same thing with a 7770

I don't think the port where the cable is plugged in matters because when I had my 550 ti in and had the cable plugged in to the onboard it would show no video until I plugged it into the 550 ti.

I'm no expert but would installing the graphic card's drivers from amd make any difference??

I tried installing them and I got an error message. When I went to the folder that the installer said that it was going to install to, the folder was empty. Also, When I tried it in the other system it worked without the need to install the drivers. After it booted with it, I installed the drivers and got no error message.

That is because it is trying to read from onboard graphics and not dedicated if plugged into you motherboard while your video card is installed.

But when running a single monitor you will have to plug it into a certain port on your video card usually. Try all of them or consult your manual that came with it.

I know it sounds stupid but that's really how it is.

Ensure you have AMD Catalyst Control Centre installed and that you have correctly seated the card into the pci-e lane. Apart from that I can't really offer any help.

Sorry man i have no idea then...

I cleared cmos and took the battery out. I then tried the card in the first lane and it still didn't work. After that I tried in the second lane and still nothing. I then tried it in the third lane and it booted with the GPU. Once I got into windows, I installed the drivers and it installed without any errors. After I installed the drivers, I took the card out to see if it would work in the first slot and it didn't. I have it running on the third slot now. The first two slots are supposed to run at PCIe 3.0 x16 and the third is PCIe 2.0 x16 but in the manual it says if you have a sandy bridge processor, which I have, the PCIe 3.0 slots will only run at PCIe 2.0 speeds.  Would running it on the third slot make a difference in performance in gaming? If not, I will just leave it there. Thanks to everyone for your help.

No, pci-e 3.0 has literally no to little perfomance decrease on pci express 2.0 slots

The performance difference is that little you won't have a noticeable change.
