PC upgrade for gaming, coding & virtualization

Go to solution Solved by podkall,

Good start point, I'd consider if 7800x3D wouldn't be up for an option, the reason being it has 8 cores and 16 threads and clocks pretty fast too, being more faster for games and probably cheaper.

Consider, if this:

coding & virtualization (one VM, while i'm working on projects)

isn't demanding, or won't increase in demand drastically that would justify buying 7900x

then you might aswell just get the 7800x3D

if you need a new CPU cooler for the upgrade, this could work if the demand isn't high: (using the 7800x3D cpu)

Not sure why you'll need a 7900X, do your project really need 12 cores ?

For gaming the weak 1060 makes the CPU close to irrelevant ...

maybe get something like a 7600 and a 6650 xt.

Don't want to bottleneck your CPU with a 1060. If you want it to be cheaper, get 16 gb ram instead of 32.

I guess it's for the CPU related tasks, I don't see OP trying to run Cyberpunk on max settings with their 1060, they're just chilling on some reasonably runable games by older hardware

OP had previous posts with planning on a 7600 + GRE build, but I guess plans have changed or something, the budget is lower, not sure if it's because the 1060 is truly enough for them or if it's lowkey for budget reasons,

I mean I don't shame, I used GTX 1050 effectively for several years myself

Yeah, then OP should get a 7800x3d, or a 7950x if he will mainly use it for productivity. but a 1060 with a 7800x3d...

6th gen Intel, even on slow GPU you will see small uplift and major 1% low improvement

There are two reasons, why i choose higher CPU:

  • I'm seeing that more games using more CPU, e.g. Battlefield 2042 use 100% and Helldivers 2 use 60% of my CPU at my current system.
  • I need more core for my VM for productivity.

I mean yeah but not if you don't need "as many cores as possible", the 7900x has 4 extra cores and respective threads onto the 7800x3D, but 7800x3D isn't slow outside gaming and has 8 cores and 16 threads, which can crunch just about any low-medium level productivity,

even high end productivity in some areas that don't necessarily advocate for many cores or are willing to wait slightly longer for their renders or whatever to finish.

  • The 7800x3D is on top of list for Photoshop, since Photoshop doesn't really utilize many cores:

image.thumb.png.c62cea723d7df860626b3ac26c7a0edf.png

  • Overall it's best currently in gaming, which is kind of an aim too:

image.thumb.png.6be0ad64e981447953bb2a00ed27edc6.png

  • The only place where it's not as great as some other choices are heavy multicore loads like Blender, but still far more manageable if you're upgrading from a very old CPU:

image.thumb.png.d8c096d1f3e5ae89ca1e1ab46276bd24.png

And even though coding is aim in this thread, it is not absolutely terrible since it's fastest gaming chip, in the example below in a real world situation the difference is 45 vs 67 minutes of code compiling, which is a lot, but it's roughly an hour anyways even if you opt for the faster CPU:

image.thumb.png.fd889ed6d0da95bb78bb6c544d87aa98.png

  • The + here despite not being the absolute best at productivity is that you're getting fastest gaming CPU currently, and a fast enough productivity CPU for you to not be hung up on a project that would render all day or something.
  • Or essentially even can still probably do some productivity tasks in the background while not choking if you try to do something else or halt the creative process' speed
