Hey there fellow PC enthusiasts.

I'm looking for a direct upgrade to my current system specs but the more i look things up, the less i get an idea of what to do.

I am not looking to build an entirely new system but simply trying to figure out if it would be best to upgrade my CPU (and mobo + RAM) first or upgrade my GPU.

I've been researching for months and can't seem to find any conclusion, which is why i am asking here. (Reddit wasn't very helpful either...)

Current specs:

  • intel core i7-8700K @ 4.7Ghz all core

  • be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 4

  • 2x 8GB DDR4-2400

  • MSI GTX 1080 Ti Gaming X Trio (11GB VRAM)

  • be quiet! Straight Power 11 850W 80+Gold

Any help is very much appreciated.

Edit: I am located in Belgium and looking for the most cost-effective direct upgrade.

I don't really have a set budget, but if it proves to be better to build a new system and sell my current one (or components), i will probably need some recommendations around the €1500 mark.

Edit 2: Dual monitors - 24" 1080p144 + 27" 1440p180

Edit 3: €1000 pricepoint also in consideration.

That's a tough call. Personally I would upgrade the board, cpu and RAM. What's your budget and what country are you located?

Thank you very much, I'll certainly take a look into those. I'll probably wait a little while for some other people to post their opinions since it's really hard to find decent comparisons between my current setup and modern hardware.

The 1080 Ti is roughly equivalent to current 1080p cards, so if your resolution is 1080p I'd upgrade the CPU first. If your resolution is higher than 1080p (especially 4K gaming), I'd upgrade the graphics card first.

This is an example for 1500:

Depends on what you do with the rig..

Last year I upgraded from a 7700K to a 12400 because I couldn't install W11 due to lacking TPM.

But I didn't notice any difference in real life.

I guess there was but it isn't big for sure.

I definitely could have kept the 7700K (and W10).

I'd consider upgrading to 32GB anyway

Ok, but upgrading one wil make the other a bottleneck

You could just upgrade everything, will be a quite powerful rig, here's the AMD version :
