Budget (including currency):

Country:

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for:

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc):

The problem is that I am still running windows 7 on an older system. I have been planning for a while to build a new system to replace it but have not committed to it yet.

I have some knowledge on how to proceed but have some questions about a few details.

Old system---->add sata ssd(current motherboard does not support nvme)

Clone c: to ssd

Upgrade system to windows 10(I know a little behind the curve on this......)

Run sysprep to aid in transition as I do not want to have to install everything again on the new system(not sure if necessary, but sounds like a good idea).

Build more modern system------>nothing spectacular just mid range

physically move ssd to new system and boot with everything intact and in place(some people say this is a bad idea others are more swing for the fences and hope for the best.....I want to swing)

The little fly in the mix is windows 11 because it currently does not play well with lower end ryzen 5 processors but ryzen 7 is probably overkill.

Obviously using the media creation tool I can upgrade to windows 10 for free but eventually I want all this moved to the new system without a lot of hassle.

I have watched multiple youtube videos but I have yet to find one that covers the scenario I am currently in.

windows 7(old system)----->upgrade to windows 10------->move all to new system and have it work.

That is really why I have not upgraded yet because the migration of everything to a new system is a stumbling block especially when multiple people have multiple opinions on the subject.

I know this not a once-size-fits-all situation but I need some advice about my proposed plan(or lack of one). Could LTT do a video dealing with this sort of scenario?

Why not just build the new System, with the new SSD, put Win10 on the new SSD, and see if you can just grab the old disk, and put it in the new build?

(@Hinjima @PDifolco @Dedayog can you read Win 7 files drive on Win 10 machine?)

What's your new system ?

But well if you're on Windows 7 I really advise a full new install, it's really easy now to reinstall a bunch of software semi automatically (with tools like Ninite or PatchMyPC)

And get a NVMe drive, you could use your old SATA to transfer files over or as storage

The exact specs for the new system is still pending but looking at something like.........

ryzen processor(5 or 7)windows 11 is a problem child..........🙄

at least 16 gigs ram

lower end b550 motherboard, still to be determined

rx 6600 graphics card

eventually nvme drive as boot drive once system is built and stable(and everything migrated)

still mulling over options on how to move forward from here............many people, many opinions sigh............🤔
