Hi,

I've been having black-screen issues for a while now and they have been progressively been getting worse recently. I've had the computer for a little over 3 years now and these black-screens have only really started over the last year or so, they only ever occur when I'm playing a game, not when I'm on the desktop or using other applications. The video output will randomly and suddenly stop but I can still hear audio from discord in the background.

Specs:

AMD Ryzen 5 5600X

Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO Cooler

Corsair Vengeance 3200Mhz C16 DDR4 RAM (2x8GB)

ASUS ROG Strix B550-F

Gigabyte GeForce RTX 3060 Ti Aorus Master 8GB

Kingston 1TB KC3000 PCIe 4.0 NVMe M.2 SSD

SilverStone 650W Strider Gold S 80+ Gold

I have tried reseating the graphics card, updating drivers and different display port cables. Is there anything else that could potentially fix this issue? The graphics card is still in warranty, should I RMA it?

Can you confirm, if the GPU driver is crashing?

You can check this by searching for 'event viewer' then navigating to Windows Logs > System.

All events are sorted by date and time so you might need to scroll down to when the last time your PC black screened.

What you're looking for is an entry (or probably multiple entries) all reporting 'nvlddmkm has stopped responding.....'

Assuming you find this then the black screen is the Nvidia driver crashing, probably reporting its successfully recovered but not really.

Things to try:

1: use DDU to remove ALL GPU drivers and reinstall from fresh.

2: update mobo BIOS to latest ver if not already done so.

3: update chipset drivers.

4: do a fresh install of Windows. NOT a repair or and upgrade, a complete deletion of all partitions and a fresh start.

5:

If the problem persists even after a fresh Windows install then I'd be tempted to say the card is faulty and its RMA time.

If you have access to another PC that can power the GPU then you can always try whacking it in that to see if you can replicate the problem.

Also, if you have any CPU or GPU overclock in place then dial it back to stock settings

Thank you both for your quick suggestions.

I have been on a fresh version of windows since the end of last year as my boot SSD corrupted, was still experiencing black-screening on both windows installs on two separate SSDs. Fast boot is both on in BIOS and in Windows.

As you both suggested, I updated my chipset drivers, which I hadn't in a long time. It seems to have improved (no black-screening since) however it could start again as it was very periodic when it used to happen.

I had a look in event viewer and around the time of the black screens there are is an error relating to the GPU:

The NVIDIA FrameView SDK service service terminated with the following service-specific error:
%%4294967293

I will try updating my BIOS which I also haven't done in a long time. Hopefully the chipset drivers fixed it though.

I appreciate the help 🙂

Might also want to check if csm is disabled and resizable bar is enabled in bios 🙂

Unfortunately the black-screening started again just now. Upon looking back in the event viewer I did find a warning related to the graphics card:

"Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered."

I've seen many different causes for this issue online, RAM, PSU, Razer peripheral software, GPU itself? I've tried everything in this thread, how do I diagnose the cause of the problem?

Hi buddy,

The only way you're going to get to the cause of the problem is if you have access to another PC with known working bits that you can swap back and forth.

If the problem persists after a fresh install of Windows then you can normally rule out a software or driver issue which leaves only a hardware fault or compatibility problem.

Ram, GPUs, HDD / SSDs and PSUs are all pretty much compatible with anything these days so easy to swap in and out of different PCs. Motherboards and CPUs on the other hand aren't.
