After several years of using my current PC, I've made the decision to upgrade / build a new one. I've always struggled when it comes to choosing motherboards. Would anyone be able to provide recommendations or research material based on the following PC specs?

  • CPU:          Ryzen 7 7800x3d
  • GPU:          RTX 2070 (Will upgrade in future)
  • Cooler:      Arctic Liquid Freezer III 360 A-RGB
  • Case:         FRACTAL DESIGN NORTH
  • RAM:          16GB 2400mhz (Will upgrade in future)

That is a decent system.  You can't use your 16GB 2400Mhz DDR4 RAM with the 7800X3D, you have to buy new DDR5 RAM.

The Arctic Liquid Freezer III 360 A-RGB is quite expensive and extremely overkill for a 7800X3D, a normal AirCooler like the Peerless assassin SE120 or AK620 will work just fine. Save your money.

Thank you for letting me know! I was aware that Arctic Liquid Freezer III is an overkill and only went for it due to astatic reasons but I will look into other options. Had no idea about RAM situation, will make sure to get DDR5 🙂 Thank you!

DDR5 6000Mhz CL30 is the sweetspot for Ryzen 7000 🙂  That is what to look out for.

You can obviously go with the AIO but its a lot of money for some aesthetics, I prefer pure performance if budget is limited.

You obviously need a new motherboard as well if you don't already have an Ryzen 7000/ AM5 motherboard already.

Motherboard is the main thing for me as I am switching from intel processor / motherboard and pretty much re-doing my entire set-up 😅

Cool!   I can recommend the

MSI B650 GAMING PLUS WIFI - MSI MAG B650 TOMAHAWK WIFI

Gigabyte B650 GAMING X AX - Gigabyte B650 AORUS ELITE AX

Asus TUF GAMING B650-PLUS WIFI.

I have used all of these in several AM5 builds and they have all been rock solid 🙂

Not sure what's your RAM but DDR4 won't work with 7800X3D, you need DDR5 preferrably 5600CL36 or better 6000CL30

And as @Hinjima advised get a cheaper aircooler

Plus a North (non XL) is a tad small with a big 360 cooler, have to put it front and it'll kill airflow, one more reason to go aircooling
