How much does it affect performance? Does it do it during gaming too?

Is it bad bad, or just meh?

Bottleneck calculators are pure garbage... especially the one you linked, its so F'ing wrong all the time its actually impressive.

Here on LTT we absolutely hate it.

The 7700k pairs nicely with a 2060.

Depends on the games you play. An RTX 2060S at 1080p with a 7700k is losing a decent amount of performance, but its more dependent on the games you're playing. Either way, a newer CPU would get at least 10-15% in most games, but could be as absurd as another 100% in a game like WoW that runs into sharp CPU IPC/frequency/cache limitations.

Really anything before Ryzen 3000 and Intel 12th gen should be upgraded for a gaming PC.

The way I see it, you should upgrade your CPU to a 13th/14th gen or Ryzen 5000/7000 3D. If the performance gains while using your RTX 2060S are still unacceptable, then look at upgrading that too.

Either way you should upgrade your CPU from a 7700k in 2024, a 2060S is still a very capable GPU at 1080p though.

Can you give us some context here:

What are you upgrading from?

What are you upgrading for?

What is your budget?

If you're asking: is a 2060 fine with a 7700K, then sure, why not? Would it do better with a faster CPU? Sure, but if that's all you can afford, it doesn't matter.

I'd also look at the RX 6600 which is roughly comparable to a 2060.

When I say 'upgrade your CPU' I'm talking about buying a new motherboard at a minimum as well. You're effectively doing a 'platform' upgrade, which may or may not include RAM depending on what specific kit of DDR4 you're currently using.

If you have a budget for a CPU (platform) upgrade, then that'll help us give you the best recommendation as well.
