What is the recommended cooler for 5700X3D?

I recently bought a Ryzen 5700x3d. With that i am using an AG400 Plus cpu cooler with dual fans.

The temp at idle is around 70 and and usage even even gaming shoots it to 90, fans are running at full throttle.

Is the cooler simply not upto the task or is there possibly some mistake in the installation/application of thermal paste?

the ag400 is quite a decent cooler so yes this is possible. Try screwing it in more and checking your thermal paste application

Idle temps at 70C ? Should be 40...Something wrong with the cooling, either bad contact,or not enough paste

msi b450 tomahawk max. Yes latest.

70C in idle is quite high for that combination of yours. Which software are you using for measuring the temperatures and which readings are you monitoring?

cpu temp 1-16.

Ok. Do a repaste & remount of the cooler. Check if the fans on the cooler are properly oriented (proper push-pull) and connected, working.

Then check again. This time use AMD Ryzen Master and some tools like HWInfo64, OpenHardwareMonitor and/or HWMonitor.

Also, you can set a negative PBO curve offset of 15 and retest.

found the culprit. Apparently the shop i got it from made a pretty silly mistake.
