New phone for my dad

filpo

My dad's phone is on it's last legs, crashing all the time and turning off for no reason. It's an old Xr that's been dropped countless times so he's going to get a new phone. Thing is, it has to be an iPhone since he's used to it and doesn't want to switch OS's. His budget is £400 and we don't mind going refurbished (that's how he got his current phone) but not used. He wants 128gb but I'm pretty sure 64gb is fine. He doesn't use his camera a lot though if at all, even I use it more than him (and I basically only use it to take pics of my pc after upgrading). Colour can be red or black (he doesn't like the more vibrant colours but likes the red of his Xr, I bet he lieks black too)

I found these

iPhone 12 Pro 128GB Pacific Blue Renewed : Amazon.co.uk: Electronics & Photo

Apple iPhone 13, 128GB, Midnight (Renewed): Amazon.co.uk: Electronics & Photo

Apple iPhone 12, 128GB, Black (Renewed) : Amazon.co.uk: Electronics & Photo

Apple iPhone 11, 128GB, Black (Renewed) : Amazon.co.uk: Electronics & Photo

Apple iPhone 12 Pro - Excellent – Refurbished - All Sizes & Colours – Unlocked | eBay

Apple iPhone 12 | 64GB | Excellent Condition | All Colours | Warranty | eBay

Any advice on other choices? I haven't checked the offical apple website since I assumed they'd just be overpriced or just not there

I'd go for the 13, since it has the most support left in it.

Check Apple's official refurb store too. They might be a little more expensive than buying from a third party, but you get the same one-year warranty as a new one.

If his butter fingers rival Linus's, get him a decent case like an Otterbox, too.

I sold my soul for ProSupport.

we got him a glass jettech, but glass really isn't great for a case. I have a jet tech but it's a silicone one. I've dropped it counless times but not a scratch. Only two tiny ones on the screen protector, glass back is spotless. I'll look at those, thanks

eBay also offers a 1 year guarantee

cheapest 13 I could fine on the apple store was £500. Exceeding the budget, I think we'll go for the 13 most likely. But I haven't asked him so I'll check with him what he thinks is best

it definitely seems like the best deal, it does have flat sides though, and if he's anything like me, then he'll dislike those rough edges. I'm quite used to the curved sides on the 11 and prior. We'll probably go to a John Lewis to see how the edges feel in his hand. If it's good, then we'll get the 13

Thanks!

Flat sides don't really bother me if I have my phone in a nice case. I am a big fan of the otterbox symmetry lineup for cases. I do recommend a screen protector and camera lens protector though. I don't really know if the camera portion does anything but I do appreciate the peace of mind. If the 13 pro or 14 aren't massively more expensive it may be worth it to get one of those. I personally never buy a non-pro iphone because the price to performance is pretty nice in my opinion.

interesting. we never needed this since the cases used to be thick, but I'll look into this

I found a 13 pro for £390 used on ebay

We've also changed who's getting the new phone. My mum's going to get the new phone (we're in between 13 refurbished excellent or 13 pro used) as she uses the storage a lot more and the cameras a lot more too. then my dad will get her old iphone 11

My mum's phone case has flat sides (even though it's an iPhone 11) and you're right, it probably won't bother my mum too much. She's used to it anyways

Thanks both of you!
